While looking through ended auctions on ebay I found what appears to be my most recent purchase that was bought by the person that I just bought it from. Upon comparing photos it looks like it was cleaned/restored somehow? It also has an odd "clean" smell to it. I'm not sure how it was done, but looks like some of the stains were removed and it's in overall better condition.

Here's the photos from the auction before it was restored/cleaned by who I got it from.

And here is my photo of it now that I have it in-hand.

I wouldn't have even noticed this because it doesn't look tampered with at all (in reality it looks better) and the only reason I did notice was because I came across the old auction of the bill. Does this hurt the value of this bill and will it matter much in the long run? Would a TPG be able to tell? I don't really plan on selling it because I got it more my personal enjoyment rather than making a profit, and I'm just curious at this point because I've never come across this before.

I'm no expert by any means, so take this with a grain of salt... It appears to be a difference of lighting. I find I get VERY different results when photgraphing gold coins in natural light versus florescent lighting vs. incandecant lighting. I would not argue with the premise that the same thing is going on here...

No doubt about it, that note has been doctored. Careful bleaching will eliminate the staining and give the note a ghostly whitish appearance. Aside from that, I'm almost sure it was pressed as well.

This note HAS been bleached... without a doubt!

You can tell from the foxing in the orginal photo is almost all but gone in the 2nd photo...

The colour of the paper has now also gone from what should have touches of green in it .. to almost a bleached white... I assure you this is NOT from the light source of the photo..

As for value.. yes... pressing and cleaning of notes diminishes the value.. if you sent this off it would most certainly be picked up by a TPG that it has/had been cleaned and it will get a details designation of some sort... usually something like (cleaned and pressed) which is great for shirts.. but bad for notes... I don't know the market for these notes but from my experience with Canadian banknotes such a note will lose upwards of 50% standard market price b/c it has been cleaned.

To me this note looks like it's in Fine condition. So if another note that hasn't been cleaned/pressed would normally sell for $100... your note may get buyers as low as $50 or upwards to $85... depending on the desirability of the note.

If I was you.. I would put it in a plastic sleeve and place it in the spot where you keep your collection... enjoy it for what it is...but I wouldn't get it sealed in a TPG holder... not for at least 10-20 years

In addition, the seller deliberately turned up the whiteness on the scans in the auction listing to make it appear better than it really is.

You will want to air it out as much as possible to try to get rid of the smell.

Does it affect the value much? Probably not. Although the note has been cleaned and pressed, the Treasury cleaned and pressed notes in circulation during the time this note was issued. Except for the Before & After pictures from the auctions (and the smell) there would have been no way to determine when the cleaning and pressing occurred. The TPG's would not have been able to discern this (except again for the smell).

Thanks for the info, guys. Regardless of its past, it will be sitting in my collection for a while.

Based on the price the seller paid for it and what he sold it for (and his selling fees), the seller did not make too much and it hardly seems worth the trouble.
