I got permission to hunt a new 10-12 acre site that once had an 1800"s era homestead on it and I found this. I am wondering as to its authenticity, especially with the multiple errors I have noticed in the pics. It has a 180 deg die rotation, die cracks, doubling (possibly machine), and die clashes. Guys I need help with this one as I am not at all familiar with gold issues. I am calling VF20ish, what do you guys think? I know is has some problems, but If it is real, is it worth sending in for grading?

if you're worried about authenticity, weigh it.

That's amazing! We're all jealous! Free coin worth a few hundred? Looks completely genuine to me, and the die rotation will likely add value.

Quote: if you're worried about authenticity, weigh it. that won't tell you much, as the better counterfeits are made out of 90% gold(and if this is a counterfeit, it is definitely one of the "better" ones).

Awesome find!! This series is plagued by die clashes and weak strikes, so that should be normal. Looks good to me.

I have never found a gold coin. You never know what you will find "dirt fishing."

Thanks for all your input guys. I really want to get back out to that site but it is infested with snakes. I don't mind the harmless types, but I saw 6 in a little over an hour and 2 of those were copperheads, I don't do copperheads unless it is the bust of some dead person (pun intended). This property consist of a couple of acres of wooded, and several more cleared, but grown up with weeds. All total it is around 10 or 12 acres. The property owner says she is not sure where the house was located, but I think I have a good idea due to the location of 2 large oaks that stand alone in the cleared area.
I plan to locate the privy and dig that this winter if she will allow me to do so. No telling what awaits me on this property since it is located in an area where there was a lot of CW skirmishes and about 14 or so minor encampments within a 3-4 mile radius of the property.

One more thing guys, The doubling on the obverse is barely visible and can't really be seen in the photos. The reverse however is prevalent except for around the letterers in "Dollar". In your opinion, is it MD or a DDR?

The biggest problem with $1 gold coins back in their circulation days was that they were very small, and easy to lose. I'm picturing a person frantically trying to find this very coin...

I don't think slightly rotated dies are unusual for that time and are not a cause for concern. I don't know a lot about gold, but it's certainly common on other coins.
