Hello everyone,

I'd love a little help with this coin in particular.

I know that it's an Elizabeth 1st Silver penny (1573) but
would like to know a little bit more and ideally the mint.
I've tried my best with the photo's, so hopefully one of you
experienced members will know something.

Thank you!
Ben

Did you mean mint or mint mark, Ben?

All Elizabethan coins were struck at the Tower (of London) mint.

Though it's not terribly clear, I believe your mint mark (also called privy mark) is an acorn, which ties in with the date of 1573.

Whether the mark on the obverse is over another mark (I'm not sure which though as it doesn't look like ermine or eglantine, which are the neighbouring marks) or damaged, I can't tell.

Nice little coin. Can I ask what diameter it is though? Unless you have tiny hands it looks a bit big to be a penny!

Thank you for your help Tom, really appreciated.

I did mean mint mark yes.

The diameter is about 17mm-19mm

Is it a penny, do I have tiny hands?

Thanks again :)

Yes, my contact says a Threepence with bust 4D, so looks like your hands are quite normal!

I'll come back if he comes up with any other info!

LOL My contact also says it might be an interesting overdate (1573/5). He's going to do a bit more research on it.

If you enable your email (go to My CCF, Edit User Profile and you can allow other members to email you) I can send you any updates rather than fill the threads with arcane references!

Thanks Tom :) I'm very intrigued. It will be interesting to know if there is something unique about this coin. I've enabled the e-mails, thanks again.
