Hello everyone!
I've been lurking this website for ages!
I've been researching Roman coins for a bit now but really I still know very little.

I've done a few University courses on Ancient Rome, my favourite of republic to empire.
I've always liked the coin that tells the story of the secret ballet.

What do you guys think of the following example? I know it's not the best but I have a budget under $130 US. And of course, do you think it would ibe genuine.

Roman-Republic-L.-Cassius-Longinus,-Denarius

Cheers guys!

I couldn't say whether it is genuine or not, it looks OK to me, but I am not an expert. I hope it is the real deal, it looks to be a lovely coin.

Are you getting it from a reputable dealer?

It's from a seller on vcoins so I'm pretty confident.

It's a very nice coin that IMO is 100% genuine. 60 BC, the male is holding a tablet inscribed with the letter V (for five) dropping it into an urn. This is a votive offering. Sear #364.

Thanks so much for the replies guys.
I'm reading out grading ancient coins.
Obviously it is off centre, how much does that effect value? Bearing in mind it is cheaper than others of the same type.
What do you guys think the grading is more inclinded to be?

There is a sticky at the top of the page for grading your coins. You might want to post it there. It looks a very tactile coin.

to CCF!

The coins looks nice and pleasing and Genuine too. Although I'd say that you could do better with $130.

Agree zxcccxz, I've found sold example, some recent, selling for around the $100 and in probably better condition too.
However, I've struggled to find the same coin for less than $300 US on vcoins. I've negotiated the price down a little.
I did find a couple of other examples for around the same price;

I just like the story behind this particular coin :)
Oh yeah and apologies for the perhaps annoying questions of someone new to this hobby. :)

The prices of Republican coins have increased even more rapidly than most other series. I think $130 is a good price and a better one for that price would be unusual, as would one like that for significantly less. Congratulations on getting a really interesting type!

Craig, there are no annoying questions. We have all asked them, some like me, recently, others asked them at the dawn of time! Naming no names :)

Craig!

I agree with the others-- it's not a bad example for that price, even considering that it is through a "retail" seller.

Last weekend there were a couple of nice ones in the NAC auction but of course they sold for considerably more. There is a superb example coming up with Goldberg in a few days... a bit beyond your desired budget though

It's a great coin and I hope you pull the trigger! It would be a fabulous start to your ancient coin collection.

I pulled the trigger and looking forward to getting it in the mail!

I've seen some other fantastic examples of this coin. However, the wife holds the purse strings.

I've so far had a rather positive experience with vcoins with this transaction.
So in the future I might branch out and have a look at some auctions sites.

Thanks very much again for the input guys!
