I have seen slabs with the note of smoothed and a Seated dollar was marked seated. It gives a grade plus these notes. I must be looking in the wrong place to find these meanings. Also one other is when a coin is marked with just Genuine. Thanks for any clarfication you can offer.

That means that the coin's surfaces were smoothed down to get rid of the hits/ marks on the coin, which is damage ( PMD).

They are Seated dollars, so I do not see any problem with labeling it as Seated........?

You can visit the PCGS and NGC websites to find about what the Details/ Genuine designations mean. They have a page that explain it all.

Also one other is when a coin is marked with just Genuine.

"Genuine" is used by PCGS to label problem coins, for example coins that are polished, filed rims, cleaned, rim damage, etc. PCGS used to just mark them Genuine and not add any other comments, but nowadays the labels read Genuine with an approximate grade and its problem mentioned on the label. It is also used by NGC in some cases, mostly for Shipwreck coin certification.
Hope this helped you!

I can only help with the "smoothed" notation. Sometimes older coins are tooled, rubbed, or polished with a variety of materials (steel wool, brushes, mild abrasives, jewelers tools, etc) to even out the coin's surface for better eye appeal. If the grading company isn't sure what method was used to treat the coin's surface, they may add a "smoothed" notation to a details grade.

Never heard of seated- will look forward to learning.

You can go to the bottom of this page and see what the different "codes" mean. Each "code" stands for different problems.

Was it an 1873? If so it was marked Seated to differentiate it from the Trade dollar that was struck that same year. PCGS tends to do that for coins of the same denomination that were struck in two different design during the same year. (1878 Trade and Morgan dollars, 1921 Morgan and Peace dollars, 1938 Bufffalo and Jeffereson nickels, 1883 Shield and Liberty nickels etc)

Though most of us will often say " Seated dollar" or " Shield nickel" or whatever even when the date makes it impossible to be anything but.
