I know this is a ridiculous question. I'm just curious what year and what coin you would go after?! And explain how you would go about doing it?

Mine would be 1909 in San Francisco! I would be waiting at the mint to buy all 1909 s vdb's Then I might take a trip over to Carson City and load up on some Silver Dollars.

I'd be in 1793 at the Philly mint, buying out all the 1793 large cents and Half Cents, save a few in MS Red for myself and then melt all the others to ensure the rarity of what's left over.
Very unrealistic, very unethical, but sounds appealing.

Don't forget, unless you want to be hung for theft, you would need to take some means to exchange for your new coins, coins or notes would need to be current and not with too much wear for the era.

@davidrj

That is an easy fix. Just take a bar of gold back with you.

yes but still quite an investment going back in time, what was the monetary value of an ounce of gold back in 1793?

easy answer. Enough to get what ever coins were minted back in that time period. Investment wise, I'm sure you could find enough things to hide somewhere that will make the investment and trip worth while

I'd travel back to 1921 and load on 4 or 5 GEM BU 1921 Canadian Half Dollars. Or better yet, travrl back to 1804 Nd get me a few GEM BU Draped Bust dollars.

I'd go back to 1895 and pick up a few of the Proof sets for that year.

I'd also pick up a roll of 1895-O Barber dimes too.

But would they even let you into the Mint?

I'd bring a ton of silver (remember, the gold:silver ratio has crept up over time, you lose money if you take gold back), learn old German and go on a tour of the German states. There's lots of German collectors, tons and tons of variety, so many classic commemoratives and all the tiny countries you could ever want.

Or, want to be cheap? Get some cheap pre-WWI German bills and exchange those for gold and silver in the days of the Second Reich... especially if you can get your hands on anything from the tiny states like Waldeck-Pyrmont, Lippe-Detmold, etc. etc. etc.

But here's the catch: the draped bust dollars actually minted in 1804 were probably 1803-dated ones, minted in 1804 to cover up the mintage for 1803.
The 1804-dated dollar were first struck in 1834~1835, so why not travel to 1834?

I'd be at the Denver mint in 1916. I'd be there to bring back a roll of uncirculated 1916-D Mercury dimes. In Back to the Future Part III style, I would have this roll mailed to me on May 22, 2014... I'll let you know tomorrow if it worked.

That inspires me:
I'd go back to 1885, just like the movie, to the Philly mint. I'd pick up couple of rolls of V nickels, and have them mailed to me on May 24, 2014!
.......oh, I'd need to bring some Morgans to pay for the nickels. Recall the scene from the movie when Doc Brown opens up a briefcase filled with paper money from different time periods? I remember that part when Marty was given a couple of $5 silver certificates to buy clothes in 1955.

OK first off we need cash that is time specific... can't be dropping a 2012 dime back in 1871

So first off lets get a box of nickels from the bank in 2014 'Today'... now how many 1964's are in there? WE ALL know there are a lot

We go back to 1964 and trade them in for dimes, there is no need to keep any of them. Trade down get the oldest dates out and exchange them for quarters, keep the old ones, then try half's. by this time you should have a decent amount of coins from 1950 and before so crank it back to 1955 and do it all over again.

By the time you get back to 1900 you should have enough time specific stock to get a really nice key date double eagle. Here is where it gets complicated.

You go back to 'Today'-ish maybe a few years ago when gold and silver were higher and sell the double eagle. then go to a time like now-ish and buy up all the Morgan's you can get your hands on. Then go back through the 1800's the same way, starting in 1904.

Now we need a place to keep it all, so figure out when one of the free land grab things was, and pop up on the morning of the grab with a few stakes and a hammer and you've got a piece of land that can have a 'barn' on it and keep all the nice stuff in it so that is ages properly.

OK once all the is done then we can go for THE coin... a 1964 Peace dollar!

It's a time machine so just go in the middle of the night and snag a couple of sacks before they are melted in fact you would not even need to do all the stepping back, just set the controls for the middle of the night in a bank vault, in every bank vault

edit: spelling
