My daughter volunteers at the local historical society here in Cedarburg, WI. Yesterday a woman brought in a number of old books to donate. My daughter was paging through one of them, a text book from the early 1830s, when she came across this.

180 years ago or so someone pulled out an 1829 large cent or Half Cent, put it under the page of the book and then rubbed over it with a pencil leaving this image.

I think this is a wonderful moment in history captured on paper; someone's idle action that preserves a small part of our nation's numismatic past.

Wow. That's a unique piece of history that we can still relate to this day - I've done the same in classes in school on textbooks.

I see a 1829 Matron head large cent.
I wonder where this coin is now - spent over and over as a part of America's economy and worn down to G and melted? Or does it reside in a collection today? Food for thought.

That great! I'm sure it would be even more interesting to see it in hand.

Here's a photo that shows the coin etching on the page of the book.

That's fantastic. I'd say Large Cent, not half.
