I was browsing ebay and saw a listing for an 1834 half. I've been trying to learn more about this series and had a view questions about this one: 1.) The 7th star (above Liberty's head) looks different from the others- is this normal for this date? 2.) I like the color/toning of the coin, but the sharp transition from dark to light on the right side of the obverse behind Liberty's head concerns me. Any thoughts on this? 3.) I'm still working on determingin from pics if a coin has been cleaned. Thoughts on past cleaning? Thanks!

I have the same CBH. I believe it to be an O-112 R3. Here's a pic of mine. Yours does appear to have on older cleaning but as old as these are it's not surprising. Nice looking coin.

Quote: The 7th star (above Liberty's head) looks different from the others- is this normal for this date? I agree with srs77 - the variety is O-112. Star 7 is described by Parsley as a daisy and is a diagnostic for O-112. I think it's an old cleaning, but an attractive coin.

Thanks, srs77 and cipster. That is very helpful.
What about the sharp transition from light to dark on the right side of the obverse? Would that be an artifact of the old cleaning, or something else?

It appears this is a characteristic of the particular variety you have. Sometimes strike variations (pressure, planchet thickness, die spacing, alloy inconsistencies etc,) were not fine tuned and as exact as they are today. All of those variable (and more) all played a role in strike quality and imperfections. As tolerances were tightened and techniques were improved upon, these inconsistencies became fewer. In this coins case, it just looks like a different design was used for the different star and was not due to strike variation. As far as the toning stripe is concerned, I would chalk that up to, "ya never know". In this case I'd doesn't bother me much. Cleaning? Probably 100 years ago. Is it "market acceptable"? Probably. I personally don't see anything that would keep it out of a TPG slab, not that it warrants slabbing.

Muddler- yours looks like a different variety, correct? I'm not seeing the daisy star 7 as in the others.

Mine is a small date small letters version. I just had to research it to compare the the ones listed in this thread.

One more question, just to help me learn a little more about grading this series. Looking at PCGS Photograde and comparing it to the pics I posted above, i'd grade it somewhere around F15-VF20. Does that seem about right?
Feel free to move this to the grading forum if it needs to go there now.
Thanks.

johntoolkit- based on your pictures, I'd estimate the coin in the original post is a bit higher (but not much) than VF-20. Would you agree?
Any other grade opinions?

It has more details than a 20 but less than a 40. I'm new at this too and that's why I mostly buy certified coins.
