Hello All,

Just looking for some more experienced advice on purchasing graded VAMs.

Wondering what would be fair offers for an 1885 P VAM 22 graded MS61 (REALLY want this one!), and an 1888 P VAM 7C MS62.

They're NGC, which isn't exactly my 'favorite', but I'm buying the coins, not the holders. I don't want to try to inadvertently low-ball and waste anyone's time; but I also don't want to overpay, clearly.

Thanks for any and all input.

Cheers.

Pay for them as if they are AU58 or MS60 because in PCGS holders they most likely won't get those numbers unless you are lucky or they actually did a good job grading. I would be weary of any attribution they put on a holder. Look them up on ebay, Heritage and Other Websites completed listings to get an idea of their value.

I would not pay a premium for either variety. Grade & VAM the coin yourself if the pics are good or you have it in hand. Quite frankly I have seen every TPG Under & Over grade coins & both NGC & PCGS misattribute VAMS. For VAM attribution ANACS does a great job and so does ICG. For sheer dollar value coins in PCGS plastic will bring the most $$. For common varieties IMO what difference does it make which plastic it is housed in as there is no premium there anyway.

Thanks so much for the feedback.

Provides some serious food-for-thought as well. When brought into perspective. Vis a vis, maybe there shouldn't be a premium, of any kind, if we apply 'The die is the die'? It raises the question, to me, what's the point if every coin is a VAM (which they all are)? How did so much emphasis get put on identifying them result in cost increase? Classing some rarer than others? Top-100, Hitlist-40, Hot-50 in particular; then of course the rank-and-file, aka the rest. How did this emphasis start? Why is there one [emphasis on rarity]? I guess it's like all coins in the sense of mintage et al., but does/should this apply to die pairings (increase in price)?

Wow, two post reply, and now I'm questioning my own collecting paradigm. Deep! lol This sure opened a whole new can of worms, huh? haha

Cheers guys. Again, sincerely appreciated.

ps. I did a sold listings search on the VAM 22 on ebay (per suggestion)... one MS62 (PCGS) BIN went for $239, full asking price, about two weeks ago. As for the rest, ALL over the board. As are the ones currently listed. It's dizzying!

If all Morgans are VAMs, it's precisely the same as all Bust Halves being Overton varieties. The exception being, we've got a pretty good clue as to the relative rarity of all the Overtons. They vary in value for the same reason as any other numismatic item - rarity and demand, both of which fluctuate wildly in VAMming, occasionally for the same variety. We've only got a good handle on the real-world rarity of perhaps 15% of all extant VAMs (not counting ones not found yet), and those are because of high collector demand.
