My understanding is that there were 1,427 gold coins (mostly Double Eagles) in this hoard, and that they were contained in 8 baking powder cans. My question is this...How big were late 19th Century baking powder cans? Must have been a lot bigger than the can of Clabber Girl my wife's got in the cupboard. Divided equally each of those cans would hold 178 of those coins and if they are mostly Double Eagles would weigh in excess of 10 pounds each. What am I not seeing here?
By the way, I also wonder if the discoverers have not gone over a wide area on their property with a good metal detector (I imagine they have).
