Hi, I'm new to coincommunity, and I found this really cool New York quarter. I thought I might have seen something like this before, but I don't know the name. Could someone tell me what kind of error this is?

Sorry, I used my iphone for this. :D But are you sure that it is an error coin, and not just some kind of cleaning accident or anything?

It is post-strike damage of some sort. I can't tell exactly what caused it from the pics.

I agree. That didn't happen at the mint. Looks like it might have been heated which would cause that wave pattern.

The color looks wrong. Looks like a counterfeit?

Hey guys, sorry about the pictures. Do you guys know how to take clearer pictures on the iphone? It'd be a big help.

Have you tried to fix a magnifying glass over your coin and take images through the glass. A microscope combination is a better way to get images. But weight of the coin might be the first step. Is it lighter or heavier than a normal coin? The edge, does it show the copper layer that a normal coin should have?

It has the copper edge, but I don't have anything that can weigh something that weighs so little. This time, I took pics using a magnifying glass, so it should be much better.

See you can get better images. The lighting isn't glaring. But what is going on with your quarter is still a mystery to me. Almost looks like it was heated and most of the dark color was removed? The metal is showing rolling lines on the stock material that show on the obverse in a NE/SW direction. There may just have been circulated a lot. But I see nothing collectable with this coin as a mint errror. Sorry, but you did learn how to improve your images.
