I would like to say hi to everyone in this forum and here is a piece of the Australia 1966 Queen elizabeth II 50 cents silver coin which is in brilliant uncirculated condition. The coin is with natural original shade which has no toning,no black spots and no scatches on both sides surface. The piece is with shining luster surface and the most beautiful silver coin from my personal coin collection to be honest with you.I would think the coin which has tremendous high grade with high rating number because of the shining luster shade. The opinion require. Please check it out on the scans below and let me know what you think there.Thank you

Nice coin, but there are a lot of hits and marks. I wouldn't put it above MS-62.

Welcome to CCF.

See, sometimes luster can be very strong and appealing. Many high-grade coins are often dripping with strong luster. However, the little hits and abrasions on the surface of the coin plays a very important part in grading. Yours is indeed a lustrous example, but it has many little marks all over the surface which makes me put the grade at MS-63.

Seriously Shane, the highest ever graded by PCGS are MS66 ( 4 of ).

I'm with Matteproof & ZXCCCXZ 62,63 with all the little bag marks.

I have an innocent question here, related to this coin....we're all the '66's double bars?

Not that I'm aware of but of the double bars I've seen some are very obvious & others are a little more difficult to distinguish.

Would grade 63, no way it would grade 68, that's just crazy.

G'day RaritiesCoinLover & Welcome to CCF !

if you look up Google for "Double Bar", you'll find plenty of photos, including some on ebay.
The first two that I looked at on ebay were NOT, in fact, Double Bar.

I look at yours, and I can't see the bars.

A point for other collectors to comment on -
the Double Bar phenomenon, as I recall my reading on the subject, was first noticed in the late 1970s.
I haven't heard of the Double Bar on a 1966, but I might have to stand corrected on that.

It's thought that the Double Bar is not a die-error, but the result of excessive pressure during the strike.
When I was at the Mint a year or so ago, they had a nice display on the effect of different pressures.
Whilst the object is to produce well-struck coins, another object is to control energy costs.

The 1966 50-cent ceased production within months of coming into circulation - the reason being high silver prices.
As a result, they were hoarded by the public, and high-grade examples are commonly seen on the market - more so than most other Australian coins.

I'm not much into grading - most of the tiny dings on the obverse are "bag marks", which affect grade, but are treated leniently. That said, the ding between "Australia" & "1966" seems to me, to be too big to call a "bag mark"; also the one at 8 o'clock.
