As the title said I lost my love and want to collect coins..

Many many months ago I was asked to help a lady go through her silver bullion.. she had the regular stuff, 1 oz silver rounds with different characters on them and 5 oz coins with the statue of liberty and stuff and she had a few small gold pieces like $1-$10 and a few pieces of jewelry made from coins. And then a couple of bags of American silver from dimes to dollars... she bought alot of this silver when it was high she said around $40-$50 a oz is what she had told me... silver was around 21-22 a ounce at this time and she wanted to sell. . Well I shared my knowledge I had learned here about consecutive bars or bullion and certain numbers people would be willing to pay for.. so she asked me if I would help her and that she'd pay me for my time.. I said sure knowledge is free I have no problems helping... we'll while we sorted she asked me what it costs to list stuff on ebay and how to ship and everything.. so I explained it all I showed her on my smartphone that it was simple to run and she could do it herself with a little time and effort... well after 6 hours of sitting and going through all this stuff she asked me what I thought and I told her what I believed it would go for.. In total we counted something like 200 oz ingots and rounds and sorted through all the silver with over 250.00 face value..... I figured she had maybe 10-15 considering $2-$3 fave silver fetches 50+.. she scoffed and did she'd be losing money that she had more Into than that.. I helped her all day spent my Saturday helping her go through these coins for the love of the coins and the hunt..

She asked me if I wanted to list everything on ebay for her and what I would want to help her with this and getting it shipped and pretty much doing everything but holding the merchandise.. I mean not not a bad gig if I do t have to be responsible for the storage of the items, right? So I thought a few days and said that I'd like 250 a week and 10% of the sale price.. I didn't want want to low ball myself right out of the gate so I shot kind of high... well she she said she said she'd get back to me and asked me to come by thurs.. so I came by thurs and she says oh I don't have time I have to run to the bank can you come Sat. So I called her sat and she said nevermind.. we'll then I get a call Monday morning saying she's missing some stuff and she hopes she finds it... now mind you her shop had been cleaned with outside help and I haven't been there in a week.. so in asked her if she went over the tapes so for her system and she said she was going to.. I asked her tot give me a call when she went through it so we could talk about what's missing... well she calls me 30 mins later and tells me she has me on camera pocketing her silver... I was floored! This lady owned a pawn shop and helped me and my family out and she hugged my kids and was concerned when my wofe was in Guam and NKorea was threatening to bomb there.. I mean I considered us friends and that's not not a term I use lightly because I know what an aquatance is.... I asked her if I could see the tapes.. she told me I needed needed to have all my items I had in lawn out of pawn by the first of the month which was like over $600.00 and she said I could come by tues and see the tape.. so I callher tues and head down to see the tape.. I walk in and there's this lady sitting there avg lady 30-40 age range with pawn tickets in front of her.. so I come in and stand out of the way and she looks at me and says I'm only for a give you once chance to make this right. I told her I want to see to see the tape and I want to know what I'm accused of stealing.. she said the police had the video recording of it and would be contacting me.. unless I was willing to make it right, so I asked what am I supposed I supposed to do make it right if I didn't do anything wrong in the first place? She said she wasn't going to argue and asked that I have all my own tickets squared away on the first.. I left with a feeling like I just got kicked by that jerk in high school that everyone disliked but thought he was funny... I mean yrs I've worked worked and dealt with her and now I'm being accused of stealing when I pride myself on being being a upstanding gentleman and roll model for my 2 young sons... so I called the pawn shop division and asked if there was a open case with my name in it.. so I gave the detectives my head to toe vitals and asked him to give me a call when he finds out one way or another... no call backs so I called and after a week and 3 detectives there is no open case for theft against me, as far as a they knew I am who my jacket says I am.. so I explained what happened and they say there's nothing they can do about it since she didn't as actually file a police report...

I filed a report against her for extortion.. she knew I couldn't afford to get all my stuff out of pawn so she would end up with some of the gold.. well the cop took the report but under hawaii law extortion doesn't mean extortion its more of learn from this experience and never go into business or cahoots with a islander, and that came from the cops mouth... my feelings have been hurt and when I look at coins I just get a sick feeling in my stomach... I bought my first piece of graded gold a few months ago and I didn't feel like it held the significance that it should have if this hadn't had happened.... what can I do to get my boyish collecting "wind" again? Thanks for listening... PEACE...

I can see you being disillusioned by human dishonesty, but why lose love for coins?

I don't know... I was excited to help and maybe make a lil money or be able to purchase some of the jewelry she had at a discount... but it just went to crap after the accusation and I just can't look at coins without thinking about it and getting upset... maybe instead of coins I'll try something different for awhile and see if that doesn't help me rekindle my love of coins...

Also I went to sale a couple of coins at a well known (to me) coin shop in alabama and was told some coins I paid a good chunk for were lacquered and was offered $175 for a 1810 over 09 large cent and $150 for a 1802 large cent fractional error.. I purchased both coins as F - xf or better.. besides the lacquer I was told they both had environmental damage.. so after spennding a good amount on them to hear that I couldn't even get 50% of what I paid for each coin is disheartening as well... but I'm hoping that I can get them graded and do well there... I saw a 1802 pcgs in f-15 condition for 2999.99 BIN on ebay.. and you can look at my coins and see I have more detail in my coin than the ebay one so hopefully it'll grade better and be worth more...

Maybe if I had a win in my record I wouldnt be so discouraged with coin collecting. . I was thinking of trading my #7070 book and coins for a project car... but I didn't even get a hint of interest on CL for that trade. .. maybe one day the spark will return.. This has to be a step in the right direction. ...

I'd suggest that you take your entire collection and put it into two boxes, wrap them in Christmas wrap put a bow on them and a tag saying "FROM: Santa"

Then put them in the back of the closet and find something else for the next half year, a bit drastic and you might mot be able to wait till the 25th, it's a good thing to walk away sometimes thou. But don't burn bridges.

2 young sons

Split the boxes evenly and leave the "TO:_____" tags blank... just incase

Good luck with everything

If you do what ASLAN suggested, make sure they know how to find us here at CCF

Sorry to hear about this. Maybe you just need a break. I know many collectors who have done this. I wish you the best in whatever you decide.

Sounds to me that you are upset about coin DEALING, not coin collecting.

I learned a long time ago that it isn't the coins (or any other objects we collect) that upsets you, its some of the people you have to deal with.

Why not try a different aspect of coin collecting?

What kind of pawn owner doesn't know about silver and gold? Was she playing you from the start? Strange occurrence, I think pcunix has a good idea.

Don't let small people bring you down:

I agree with pcunix and zeil, Don't let these types of people bring you down. There are a lot of really good honest people on CCF, maybe that will give you some comfort. My suggestion is stick with it. I recently bought a 1796 French 5 Centimes and some Whitman Lincoln Cent books from a guy... he said the French coin was an error, and me not dealing with world coins very much took his word for it. I spent $30 on it. Turns out it's not an error coin and is only worth maybe $5 I'm not sure he did it to take advantage of me, I think he just didn't know what he was dealing with. the Whitman books had something spilled on it and when I removed the coins from the books 90% of them had verdigris. Very disappointing. Yeah I didn't spend much, but I really think if your going to sell, you should know your product as best you can. This discouraged me quite a bit too. But I took it as a lesson learned and now have more tools in my box when doing future deals which is a win in my opinion. You know in your heart you didn't steal those things, but it's still frustrating and disheartening when someone makes an accusation like that. You should go to sleep knowing YOU did nothing wrong and take pride in the way you carry yourself. People that have done things like that lady did have likely done them to others as well, and they can't get away with it forever. Don't let a couple bad apples spoil a wonderful hobby for you.

Im real sorry to hear that there are scumbag people out there. I think she got screwed on her silver originally and trying to get a fall guy to USE to make up for her STUPIDTY. Record your next run in with her and of course get the tape or copy so you have proof of the accusation.
Then sue her for defamation of character. She deserves it and spread the word around about what she did and enough people hear about it she will lose her business

I assume English is not your first language, but it sounds like this pawn shop woman has a screw or two loose. What self respecting pawn shop owner doesn't know the value of gold and silver?

Did I understand correctly that you have a pawn loan with her for $600?
Rest in Peace

I saw your post yesterday and I just didn't know what to write -- except that I am sorry that this happened to you.

But now... a day later ... I'm wondering what happened to this pawn shop owner. To make up such a ridiculously outrageous story for no reason is confusing -- unless she has a drug/alcohol problem or is senile.

Anyway, I agree with the previous posts -- put the coins away for now. Enjoy your summer. Go rock hunting or take photos of birds and keep an eye on your change because you never know ....

I would just take a break for now. Then, when you come back it will be like a fresh start. It would be good to clear your mind of this encounter.
