I have this quarter eagle that was Grandpa's and his father's before. It seems to be in AU condition. Should I have it graded by PGCS or another? I don't have time to post pics at the moment. It was his favorite piece and I don't trust putting it in the mail. . Thanks!

Leave it free. To hold a coin in your hands that dad and grandpa held is a joy.

It really depends on the grade, so showing images is a must if you want guidance here. It probably won't be worth the cost to send it in for grading unless it is MS-63 or better.

Do you ever plan on selling it? If not, I'd recommend against grading it- benefit doesn't seem to outweigh the cost.

Oh it's not getting sold unless I get in some serious financial trouble. It will get passed to my son or grandchild someday.

Looks almost unc to me. (It's what we used to call "commercial unc" a few years ago.)

Instead of slabbing, I'd suggest having the coin framed with a short history of the story behind it attached. If you leave it loose, or in a 2x2 or slab, it could easily "disappear".

The key to the series is the 1911-D and it often comes with a "weak mintmark". If your coin has the D mintmark it may be worth thousands of dollars more than a 1911 quarter eagle.

I suggest you have it looked at by a local numismatist, or send it in for grading. Not sure how the TPG's would handle a coin submitted as a 1911 if in fact it really was a 1911-D.

I suggest you take a good look at the area where the mintmark would appear

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the great responses. I like the framing idea Westernsky. Jimbucks, I looked with my new 10x loupe for any sign of a mint mark doesn't appear to be one but I am not very good at spotting flaws yet. However I did find a 1999 dime with 2 die cracks the other day in my pocket change, so I am getting better at this.

My Grandpa also had a bin labeled "ERRORS" with lots of pennies and some silver and nickels in it. Sometimes I figure out what he saw, sometimes I don't.

My eyes hurt now.

Looks AU to me. Probably not worth the cost of grading. I would get a nice holder from a coin shop for it, just to stop the wear on it.

I can only guess AU-55 from those pictures.

Maybe AU-58...
