I agree, it most likely took an amazingly well placed hit. Kind of cool at first glance though. Also, I am sure you have noticed that it is a so-called "Poor Man's Doubled Die". Excessive die wear on the second 5 in the date makes it look sort of doubled and is fairly common for this date and other early "fifties" LWC's. Fun find!
