I've won a couple PCGS PR69DCAM coins on ebay, and I'm wondering if these conditions are OK for a PR69 grade. I have 2 JFK halves with small scratches on the obverse (they are much more obvious in reality than the pictures show) and I'm wondering if this is OK for a PR69 grade or if these are somehow damaged, albeit still in the holders. I also have a PR69 Silver 1976 Ike dollar with brown spotting, and I'm wondering if that's just toning that has occurred, or if this is damage which has occurred because the PCGS slab was stored improperly. Any help appreciated, as I would like top try and return these ASAP if I can! Please keep in mind these are all slabbed PCGS PR69DCAM coins, tia! small scratches on JFK halves: Brown spotting on IKE silver dollar

Once again... Any proof coin can get the grade PR-69. This is just a false grade for people to sell TPG coins. The graders probably missed the spots/scratches or don't care. If I was you, stop buying any TPG proof coin. You must always make sure you review the coin before buying. A big submission can allow the submitter to pick his grades he wants. I'll probably get thumbs down but it's the truth... *additional Information* The whole point in Third Party Grading was to ensure the coin is real and not cleaned. This was only for coins worth large amounts of money. Not proof coins worth one dollar to three dollars. Don't believe me, ask your dealer what he'll give you for your PCGS Pr-69 coins. I bet nothing or one dollar.

Hi solotime; yeah I'm learning my lesson these PR69s. But just to be clear; a small scratch or some spots is OK, that's not detrimental to the value? I'm assuming it's these small imperfections that knocks a coin from 70 to 69, but I just wanted to make sure.
In the case of the spotting, that looks like it could turn into something more serious over time so that's the one that most concerns me.

They shouldn't have any marks on them. The grade 69 was to mean Full struck with probably just a few missing hairline details. With those marks, they're like a PR-65. Are you sure the scratches aren't on the slabs? The spotting can be wrong storage or from being dipped. If you want to do a set, you should buy raw proof coins and place them inside a Dansco Album where you can enjoy them all at once.

I might seem like I hate TPG's but I like them all. NGC, ANACS and PCGS. I just learned the hard way with the proofs. It did teach me to just buy them raw and place them in Dansco Albums where you can show other people them or just for yourself to enjoy. I have a complete set of IKES with proofs and silver and it's very nice looking.

Yeah I turned those slabs upside down left and right looking at every spot under a magnifying glass with a light. The light really helps because any spot on the case will cast a shadow on the coin, and any spot on the coin obviously doesn't. It takes quite a few looks and turns, but eventually I was able to determine those 2 scratches are definitely on the coin. Not sure what they're going there or how they got there.
The whole reason I was interested in the slabbed coins is they were going very cheap, under $10, and I was under the impression the slabs would keep them safe for years to come. As usual, a deal too good to be true usually isn't.

Yep, that's like the same thing that happen to me. I was impressed to own TPG slabs and started buying lots of them because they go pretty cheap. When I went to trade them, my dealer just told me straight out never buy them again and hoped I didn't pay much for them. I tried to sell them for five each and they just didn't sell on ebay. If you want Kennedy halves, you can buy the Album for I think 26 or 25 with shipping included. Not sure how to get BU halves though. This is one reason I haven't started my set. I got about 30 proof halves. Sorry to hear that they're scratched though. You going to return or keep them? Don't feel bad about them, I paid 12 dollars for a NGC proof 2005 nickel which is worth one dollar...

IMHO... there is absolutely nothing wrong with buying a TPG graded coin. The caveat is that you MUST inspect the coin and not just trust the grade. You should inspect any coin before buying, so I don't think there is any revelation with this message...

Yes, those coins are over graded. I would give them PR67 at best. PR69 should have NO obvious marks on the surfaces of the coins. This happens a LOT more with PCGS and NGC than folks want to admit. However... Saying dont buy TPG slabbed coins at all is rather ridiculous. Simply be sure of the coin in the slab. BUY THE COIN, NOT THE SLAB.

The proof Ikes in my PCGS registry set are all PF69, and they all look flawless. The proof Kennedy halves that I purchase from davenders for my Dansco album are also virtually flawless. Bama is right. One must still inspect the coin, even if it's in a slab. For ebay, I look for the auctions with good, honest photography.
