1909-S Lincoln Wheat Cent

Found this in a flip in large collection wheat cents I got last month.

Is that toning a old cleaning?

Unfortunately, this looks like a plain 1909 Lincoln with an added mintmark.

Mint mark is too big and out of position. Genuine coin with an added mint mark. Bummer, dude!

I don't know if I'm quite ready to write it off as a fake yet. I'd like to see a close of the mint mark as well if it's possible and maybe a few more shots of the entire thing with different lighting? It definitely looks likes it's been altered but maybe it was once polished/cleaned often and re-toned? The position of the mint mark doesn't bother me since it's not a V.D.B. (4 known positions I think on a V.D.B.?). It does look large though.

Maybe I'm way off base here though and not sure what you all are seeing to say fake? Other than the larger mint mark. The details seem to be there and don't look mushy, and looks about VF30/35. The overall light powder/rust brown looks like an old wheat I have and then it looks like it was circulated again and toned or cleaned and toned.

Spotting fakes is for sure not a strong point for me so I am always willing to listen and learn though.

- surfaces are off, rough fields, overall look is off
- hair detail is wrong, probably weak due to the casting and creation of the fake mold
- MM is completely wrong
- the rims don't look right to me

Bring up a picture of a genuine 09-S and compare side by side, you'll see what I'm talking about.

Thanks Thad. I did some comparisons last night and downloaded some pics to do a side by side and I am starting to see your points. The only thing that stuck to me was the massive 'S'. If anyone's interested, I can post a few of the pics I used to compare? Maybe a learning experience for more?

Sorry, this one's fake. I agree with BadThad that it's cast. The weird line on the rim is where the two molds met and the pourous surface is because it was made with low-quality molds and probably crappy metal. I'm glad you just found it in a collection and didn't pay a fortune for it!
