I dropped into the Vienna mint today and purchased a new Maria Theresa thaler. For any one who might want a reference point I thought I would post it here. The edge is really poorly executed. I am confident that the edge is damaged when striking, as they now use a collar when they strike MTTs. The collar blurr's the edge. While I was at it I thought I would also post a photo of the 2003/2004 edge error coin. First up the new coin

Modern-Maria-Theresa-Thaler-2014,

Here the new coin, edge photographed as well, on the left and the edge error coin on the right. the edge error coin has clementia Upside down due to someone setting up the edge dies incorrectly. In the photo the error actually is the easy edge to read its only when you read it as it is meant to be read ( Justitia et Clementia) that you realise Clementia is oriented incorrectly. I rotated both edge photos so they are in the same position.

Probably you are right, austrokiwi, but why we don't see a trace of collar from the MTT?

About the 2014 strike, I circle the features in blue that are in common with H60 and H61 so I would say it is likely the new strike imitates the prototype of H60 or H61. Do you agree?

About the 2003/2004 edge error MTT, did the Mint retrieved the error coins? I think it would not be appropriate to show an inverted "Clememtia" on the coin. Would it be a matter of disrespect to the Queen? Do you think this error coin be easily found in ebay? Henry

Henry I think the coin is just a continuation of the two varieties you mention. The error coin could be found on ebay but unless the seller identifies it I suspect it would be like looking for a needle in a needle stack( change is saying deliberate). Not sure what you mean about the collar

With a vefifiably currently produced one in hand, my questions would be what does it actually weigh, and also what is the measured diameter? The latter parameter ought to be more uniform than in the past if it's now being struck with a collar.

LOL some one had to ask that question because the answer has me a little surprised. From the card with the coin

Fineness 833.3/1000
Fine weight 23.39 grams
Total weight: 28.07 grams (?!!)

Are you yet going to confirm conformance to those specifictions via your own examination?

Thats an affirmative. The surprise for me is the weight. My experience, and all my references, have the weight at 28.06 grams. I now have some more digging to do!
