I am considering opening up and selling on ebay I have about 700 ancient and medieval Chinese cast coins that I'm looking to sell. My question is: What is the best and cheapest way to mail a small padded envelope with tracking? Does this have to be done at the post office or can it be done with my printer at home? Or is it better to send the coins in a letter envelope without tracking for a far cheaper price? I am hoping to charge around $2.50 for shipping, maybe even $1.00 if I go the letter route, charging exact cost of course. I did some research last night on the USPS website, but it didn't really help me. I would like you guy's input. Thanks! Edited by TypeCoin971793 06/18/2014 09:33 am

I have only done 5-6 single coins. (Ike Dollars.) Used 2 oz postage, with tracking. I charged $2.95 === and only shipped to 48 states. Right or wrong, I hope this helps some.

You can mail a bubble mailer, up to 3 oz, with tracking, via USPS First Class mail for $1.93 when you purchase postage through ebay. You can then print the label, tape it on, and put it in your mail box. I would strongly recommend always shipping with tracking just to protect yourself.

Mailing coins in a First Class letter envelope can be a disaster if not done properly. Coins are rigid objects and the envelope can be torn when being processed through automatic sorting equipment. To avoid that situation, I use self-sealing corrugated cardboard coin mailers although two thin pieces of regular cardboard cut to size will work as well. The envelope cannot exceed 1/4" thickness and must be marked NONMACHINABLE, I have a red ink rubberstamp for that but simply writing with a red marker would work as well. The postage would be the First Class rate plus 20 cents for the nonmachinable surcharge. I have mailed over 200 coins in this manner without a single loss.
For more expensive items, I use a standard bubble mailer with click n' ship printing label and Delivery Confirmation.

ebay has made it really easy to ship first class packages at home. After the item has been paid for, simply click 'print shipping label'. It will bring you to a screen where you will select details of the shipment. For me, it's 'first class mail package/thick envelope'. It will then prompt you to pay for the shipping and after that you can print. When calculating a price for shipping remember the cost of materials, seperate ebay shipping fee, and your time. You may want to consider offering free shipping with higher item starting prices. Also, if you have not registered as a seller in the past, there will be a hold on your money from sales in your PayPal account. The details of this rule state that you can still pay for shipping with this held money, but I was never able to get it to work when I was doing it. Most importantly, have fun with it. We're always here to help!

VERY IMPORTANT have a 14 day return policy!! ebay buyer protection Trumps any seller No Return Policy!! In your terms for Return Policy, state buyer has 3 days of receipt of item to notify seller of intent to return. Also buyers pays return shipping with signature verification. You are allowed to charge a small restocking fee, this may deter customers. You need to decide how important it's to you to include one. Also state in yourReturn policy, item has to be returned in original condition and in original packaging. These are a few of the tips to protect yourself. I opened a store in November and it's when my sales greatly increased. I even made bronze top rated seller by march. Prior to then I barely sold 90 coins in a year. My sales this year were averaging $1000-$1,500 gross monthly. June was a really bad month, nothing sold until the 16th and the month ended with 14 sales, which were low dollar, and still enough to justify a store. Good Luck Typecoin with your venture!! Let us know how your doing from time to time. A other good resource is the community forums on ebay, they can be accessed from the site map @ bottom of ebay pages. They have a store thread and several seller threads and groups , along with dedicated coin groups. I've found this a most valuable resource!! You can post questions and get response from other sellers and occasionally an ebay employee. Also read all you can re: selling on ebay their policies and this springs seller update!!

I use ebay's mailing and it works well. It's convenient, done at home and cheaper than going to the post office. You get tracking as well, which costs an additional $1.05 at the post office. The tracking is invaluable to me. I charge $2.75 for shipping in the U.S. It actually costs me around $2.80 to ship a package (postage, ebay fees (usually 17 cents), padded mailer, coin holder and I put my coins in a small coin envelope inside of a cardboard insert), but I'm too lazy to redo all of my auctions and change the price. I charge $7.50 for overseas using ebay's system. I've never had a coin sent using ebay go missing. I also offer overseas buyers a $3.00 option which is first class air mail in an envelope with a cardboard insert, but no tracking. Only a few buyers choose this.

I print at home labels from PayPal/eBay you get a small discount over the PO and it is easy, however I take all my letters and parcels to the PO for drop off and have them scan them in (free) so I have a record of proof of mailing receipt. Then my postman stamps the receipt with his seal - never had to use it to fight a claim, but I am happy with the piece of mind I get doing it that way.

Biokemist is right..PROTECT your coins..at any cost, within reason...if multiple coins in 1 order...take pic of mailing label, next to ALL coins in order, to prove ALL went into envelope(#3 ebay scam?"My 2nd coin was not in packet"(when it WAS...and, these clowns win every case..lies and all)...to prevent "coin swapping"..if high end coin..shoot distinct die marks for your records, in case of rare swap...a swapped coin would easily look much different....and, finally....NO returns means NOTHING....IF a case is opened, and, you do not refund...ebay pays the buyer..then BILLS you...if you don't pay, they shut you down..the buyers KNOW this...Never sell to ZERO feedback buyers...since we can no longer see records, it's impossible to see any "Feedback Removed", which, after taking away seeing negative feedback left, was the only way to see shady buyers....Never state a coin is "under-graded"...they will use that against you, if they are buying on approval, 9very common now) to see if they can slab and get 2 or more grades higher...if they cannot, they just return it as "not as described"...NEVER leave feedback FIRST...used to be ok, but, best to wait for them to leave you 1 first, in case of a hassle......the good news? 99% of sales are fine...it's the 1% that just is incredible sometimes...
