That appears to be a lamination, not a Cud, because the rim and dentils are still visible.

A Retained Cud would still show the details - the broken piece of die is still there, but loose - is the reverse the hammer die for IHC's? I don't know if a hammer die *could* retain a Cud. However, I'd also expect weakness of detail in the corresponding area of the reverse.

VGish details and I agree, you'd see weakness on reverse opposite of Cud.
Looks more like lamination.

the reverse was the hammer die until the bronze issues of 1864, when it switched to the obverse.

Yeah, the more I look at the edges, on the rim, the more I think lamination. It's a fascinating one, though, and a very appealing coin as a result.
