If you watched last night, Rick bought a Caligua silver denarius. Comments regarding that coin or transaction?

It was authenticated by Rick's expert. Rick paid just under the retail price. You can tell he really wanted the coin, but wasn't to happy about what he paid. The seller really stood his ground against Rick and only wavered at the last moment to close the deal. I'd say the seller won that round.

Who ever minted the coin, in my opinion, was not a big fan of Caligua and made him extremely ugly. On his bust, there are bags under his eyes and he was given a long pointy nose. Caligua's demise was met shortly after the coin was minted.

I found the scene on YouTube.

David Vagi from NGC was the one who authenticated it and stated the retail price. I would be interested to hear from our Ancients folks if they agree with the stated retail value.

That's all I see when I click on Kelly's link. This episode hasn't screened here yet, so I can't see it. Sorry.

As for value, well, the only catalogue giving values for Caligula coins is now over 10 years old. And Caligula is both infamous and had a short reign, making his coins scarce to start with. Try looking here on acsearch for similar coins - or perhaps even the same coin, being sold previously.

It sold in 2008 for $5100, and $2600 in 2006. $8500 is a strong price but it is a very rare variety, although the porosity/marks are distracting in my eyes.
