I could have posted this coin in the grading section - but actually there is not much to grade here as this O-101 is in low grade at G4, in a good day perhaps G6.
It is a significant coin, however, being America's first half dollar
and one I was really glad to add to my collection. There are 5 (6?) die varieties for the year, and O-101 is the most plentiful. The first thing to go in low grade specimens is the date, and thankfully on this coin the date is still plainly visible.
From Jonathan Kern in 1986 (as G6).
I would be glad to hear your opinions.

The thing I noticed right off is that the wear's uneven, and I wonder why that is.

Considering the scarcity of coinage at the time this coin circulated, it's remarkable coins as nice as this one exist. It is a beautiful example. Thanks for posting.

The imperfect technology of the time made consistency in planchet production and strike quality problematic - although good even strikes are found, examples such as this are not uncommon either.

What a wonderful, original, honest coin.

Another amazing coin GERMANICVS. Your collection never stop amazing me. I think it has enough juice for a G-6. Very nice, original coin!

I've dealt with Jonathan Kern before. He has always been pleasant to deal with.

Nice old coin. Is that a rim hit on the obverse at 7 o'clock?

Often it was because the dies were not set properly and the die faces are not parallel to each other. This results in the coin having a strong strike in one area and a weak strike 180 degrees away. Much like what is seen on this coin LIBERTY is very well struck while the date area is very weak.
