So, I recently got my mint proof set, and I had already purchased one of the pres. proof sets seperately. When looking at the 2007 collection, I noticed that the edge lettering on the pres. dollars is either very faint or not even there. On the business strikes it is relatively bold. I got out the first set I ordered from the mint and they too have the same issue. It's pretty hard to tell when trying to angle the holder just right, but on maybe 2 out of 8 proofs the lettering is pronounced or easily spotted. On the others, I'm thinking there are a few that have no lettering at all, or it's just very very weak. Plus there's a huge color variation on the edges compared to the obv and rev. Has anyone noticed this? What am I missing here?

I haven't heard anything about weak edge writing on the Presidential dollars. I just ordered my set yesterday, when I receive it, I'll have to look at it and let you know.

I open mine and noticed that as well. I can't tell if all letter are there Weak or some are missing. or if it is just the way they are packaged. I have not broke them out and don't plan on it. But with that said I do like how the OBV, and REV look as Proofs. I am guess you will see soon if not already proof set for sell with weak lettering.

Now that I wouldn't doubt. I like the looks of them too, but I think the quality control on these was not as good. Since I have two sets now, I may take the worst of the two from a grading standpoint(I don't think any of these would even make 69), and crack one open to get some pictures. Very odd...

I'd asked about this previously and nobody knew. The edges make it look like the circulating coin is clad or plated. I haven't been able to find out what's up.

yikes people don't buy proof sets. If you didn't know already, over 900,000 pres proof sets have already been sold. Over 500,000 complete proof sets have been sold. This stuff will be worthless 10-100 yrs from now. Making/selling to many. Everyone thinks this 1st yr of pres proof set will rise like the qtrs. Well, everyone is thinking that, including the mint so they are making plenty of this to fill the demand. The Mint is the Biggest Coin Dealer in the world..just one problem...they don't buy it back.

The Sac and President dollars ARE clad. They are a Manganese brass, clad to a pure copper core.

I don't always buy for investment. If I like a coin I buy it.

mine looked weak or missing as well. I buy 2 sets so I can break one out to fill the books up to date so I broke out one that looked weak or missing and they was fine I think it is the plastic they are using that makes the IGWT and date look like it is not there. and they wont be worthless to me as I need the P D and S to have the set complete so why not get them all at once and save money on them. Yea both the sets I have are really weak on the edges compared to the business strikes. I'm guessing they dont strike the rim lettering more than once like they do the obv and rev of the proof coin for a detailed strike.

The proofs have he lettering put on at the same time as the striking because the lettering is on the collar. So the first strike forces the planchet against the collar and creates the letteing, then the second strike brings up the details more and of course since it is still in the collar the edge lettering would HAVE to be clear and sharp. As Garylcsr found out the lettering that looks weak when you look at it in the holder turns out to actually be strong when you open the holder and you can see it without the intervening plastic.

Agreed, Spider.
90% of my purchases are because I think the coin is purty, or just plain cool. That's why I'm a coin geek.
Coins aren't really investing, anyway. They're "speculating", which is not the same thing.
