Oh, and thanks for the info, Condor.

That explains why the edge lettering is in a fixed position around every coin (e.g. the date is always at the exact same position).

The clad layer is also much more even on the edge on my proofs. I guess that indicates that the planchets are much more carefully prepared?

On the business strikes the transition between the layers usually falls in the "beveled" areas on the edge making it hard to see. On the proofs with a completely flat edge the transitions should be easier to see.

I do not know why the transitions should be more "even" unless it has something to do with the extra polishing that the planchet receives acting to "grind down" the edge slightly.

Well, that is just fine to to buy it if you just think it's cool. I just point out the value because the value will unlikely never increase within several lifetimes. Nothing wrong with just thinking it's a cool coin! Just bothers me because people pay so much more than they have to for this stuff.

I am the same way, I bought a couple sets just to have. They were marketed pretty well with the 3 coins in the case and the price seemed reasonable.....of course my wife does not agree she would tell my kids "Now, daddy bought 3 $1.00 coins for $14.95, does that sound like a good deal?" They did like loooking at them though....

I bought 3 sets just because I like them. I'm not concerned with future value as much as showing them to people and using them as gifts. :)

I'm assuming that you're angry at places like the mint for the prices they charge? If it's the fact that some people pay more than others for what they want or like, I fail to see how that is your concern. It does of course potentially drive up the price for other folks, but I buy coins from the mint to keep things to hand down to the next generation, not for resale. When buying outside of the mint, I would say that most if not all of us are pretty frugal and look/research for the good deal.

Nope, it will be worth at least $4.

As a side note coininfo, things written online can be taken in a myriad of ways, so wording is key. If you find yourself shaking your head thinking "what are these people thinking buying something like this", the words will probably not come out correctly on paper. A re-read of your post could have easily been turned into,

"I understand that folks may be buying these for their own personal sets, as many people do, but do realize that they are making a lot of these and I see the chances of these having high future resale being very slim." then post your figures of course. Just a simple word of advice since I have been there. Most folks on here have pretty thick skin, so don't let my suggestion turn you off. This is a great place, and because of folks like you taking the time to post facts and figures, we continue to have solid info.

What happened to the fourth coin?

My concern is that when you work at a coin dealer shop, as I do, and see people bringing this stuff back in to sell; their faces when they realize they are worthless and they got ripped. Can't tell you the countless people that have come in with State Qtrs thinking they were gold to find out they were just quarters. Kids and Adults alike. Just ruins there day and possible hobby.
So you really want to take a stand on all fronts for people who are trying to get in to collecting these for a profit years down the road. I have talked several customer out of spending money on State Quarters. Make them realize the mass production of these things and they second guess. See the Pres Dollars being the same way...if it lasts.

I'm with ya coininfo, and my post wasn't an argument on what their future worth is. It is unfortunate that people are not as "informed" as they need to be. They have nobody to blame but themselves IMO. All we can do is tell them reality when they approach and ask a question. My thread was not one of "god, I can't believe my future investment has weak edge lettering!". It was just a topic. I did not falsely promote their future value, and having said that, my point to you was we do not frown on what other people collect around here. To each his own. Not knowing the reason for collecting such things is even more reason to be careful.

You are in a great place to spread valuable info, as it sounds like you do, but I have to hope that you don't make people feel like fools that come in, but tell them something like, "well, we've all been there before, that's why we learn before we buy now and ask a lot of questions"....

I, too, have the Proof Presidential dollars.
My reason for wanting them being: I began collecting proof dollars beginning with the Eisenhower dollars, the the SBAs, the Sacs, and ASEs, so it was just a natural thing for me to continue in the same thread with this new series.
As for future value, I collect coins because I enjoy the hobby, not for what they might be worth somewhere down the road. If I see a coin that I like, and, if I can afford it, I get it - just because I'd like to have it, or to complete a set - something like that.
I don't have a wife, nor do I have any offspring to pass my meager collection on to, and I've no doubt my family will sell it as fast as they can after I'm gone, so my coin collection is for my pleasure and enjoyment. Not for it's value in the future.
As for the edge lettering on the proofs - out of the plastic, mine look to be a fairly strong strike. As has been pointed out in another post, I believe the plastic distorts it a little making it look weak.

I agree with Ralph. I don't think I have ever purchased a coin with the thought of "investment" in mind.

Sorry Conder, 4 coin set......

Tights, your comments are excellent. Wording is the key, coininfo you sound very knowledgeable about the hobby but many of you comments to me at least seem very negative. I am sure you don't write them with that in mind, its just what they appear to me.
