Quote: I find Sap's commentary bordering on offensive. Quote: ... are you really going to take your super-valuable coin you've just bought out of the 2x2, airtite or slab it came in, and place it in the album with all the other coins? Quote:Yes. Nice, jbuck. And why not, Sap? Aren't we supposed to be buying the coin and not the holder? This is more of a rhetorical question. This is actually the reason why I won't place my Morgan dollars in a Dansco album(s). I will not be releasing the key dates from their slabs. Just can't make myself do it. So that collection will remain a slabbed collection. But wait- I could always buy those slab albums. At least I wouldn't have to worry about that pesky little 1895 hole. Hmmmmm.

Personally, I do enjoy the albums. Especially my nice pretty Danscos. I have more holes than coins in each of the books, but it helps to keep me motivated. I enjoy my coins better in my albums than in the 2x2s and when I see those holes, or I show my albums off, then I get reinvigorated to go looking for that 1909 S VDB. I'm sure that I have one in my pocket change somewhere.

I free them also and put them in my 7070 dansco. Even took a jbuck recommendation and tape the little grade cards from the slabs to the inside cover.

I take a different direction. I don't start sets that I KNOW I won't be able to complete (short of winning the lottery).
Quote: If we all did that, we would have no coins at all. Not at all. I have a full set of 2-cent pieces, VF to MS-65. I'm 3 coins short of a full IHC set in MS-63 or better. I have 4 sets of Roosies: -- Raw Unc -- MS-66 -- PF-67 -- MS-66 FT (or FB) And I could go on. What I won't do is start something like an SLQ set with no hope of getting a 1916 in a reasonable grade (VF).

Once the coin is separated from the slab you definitely lose any guarantee from the TPG. And it would be unlikely a buyer would believe you either.

Quote: I find Sap's commentary bordering on offensive. I have albums, and while they are not my primary high-grade collection, they are certainly an aspect of my collection I consider important and I enjoy working on them when the time and opportunities arise. Apparently, in his eyes, that makes me less of a collector. I'm sorry if I came across that way, it certainly wasn't my intent. I don't like using albums, other people do. That doesn't make me superior. That doesn't make me inferior either. It makes us different. And different's OK. Perhaps it's just a cultural difference. Here in Australia, such albums for Australian coins used to be fairly commonplace back in the 1970s, but the only ones you see for sale in the coin dealers these days are old recycled ones. Nobody seems to want them anymore.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Quote: I find Sap's commentary bordering on offensive. Not me. If you ask for an opinion, you might just get it here on the CCF. As for me: Here's the inside rear cover of my Seated Liberty half dollar Dansco Album: Can you tell how I feel about slabs?

I here ya moe. Maybe you are the one I heard this from. I know all of my albums have been this way since I heard about it on here. As for worrying about the devalue. Thats not my worry that will be up to who inherits them.

I trust my 2x2's far more than any album. Those I had in albums from years ago have faired far worse than the ones I have had in faded and discolored 2x2's for over 40 years... But slabs I don't like... too big and hard to store. besides, with 2x2's in binder I can decide where the 'holes' are...

Something I encountered today as I was album/folder shopping for my expanding collection of business strike Kennedy halves is that they sometimes leave holes out. I looked at Dansco albums, and folders from Whitman and Warman's. None of them seem to include the 40% silver Unc. 1976-S. But the Ike Dansco (in comparison) does have the hole for the 1976-S 40% Unc. dollar--which was only sold in the same red envelope with the silver Half and Quarter for the Bicentennial. What to do, what to do... Ended up going with the Whitman folders since it's within my budget right now. Not sure what to do with that silver Bicentennial though--it will be the only Kennedy in my collection without a home.

It's a challenge in its own right to acquire nice common date coins. I am working on a Dansco Mercury dime album and I have no real intention of acquiring the 1916-D - it's hard enough to find everything else in the AU grades that I am looking for....
