Here's a new purchase, graded by NGC. What grade does it deserve, and how do you think NGC called it?

The details shown in the pic are nice, but the pictures look very oversaturated, which makes it a tough read on an already tough coin to grade. It's also really tough to read the luster....which is absolutely crucial on higher grade incuse gold. With that said, I can see a bit of luster above the eagle's head on the reverse, so I am making an educated guess that there is more luster in the fields than meets the eye. The eagle's feathers are full, as well as the indian's bonnet. I am at a lock between 62 and 63...but assuming there is a lot more luster than what I can see....I am going to go with 63.

I agree with johnny. I believe NGC said MS63 if the luster is good. The obverse is quite pleasant and the whole coin has a well struck appearance.

Very hard to tell with those pics. I will say MS-62

I think NCG said MS-63 but I'm between 62 and 63.

My photos always come out with too much color, especially on gold. Using Photoshop I typically reduce the saturation by 30 points or so to give the images a more realistic hue. Here are other shots with the saturation turned down even more:

I'd say you've got an MS62 in the first set of pics and AU58 in the second set of pics!

There's definite signs of wear in the headband on the obverse. I say AU-58. Given the gist of your post, I'm guessing you are not agreeing with NGC?

Man this is a tough one, either AU55 or MS62 I'm leaning towards MS62 though I'm guessing NGC went the other way.
For color work, try using the levels and click the white eyedropper in the level box, then click somewhere on the slab that is white, that should help with your color balance. If shooting in raw open in the raw editor and adjust the color temp. That should help out tremendously.

Quote: For color work, try using the levels and click the white eyedropper in the level box, then click somewhere on the slab that is white, Thanks for the tip Westcoin! I'd tried the "color cast" correction in Photoshop but it didn't seem to provide any improvement. The eyedropper seems to work better. These are the same shots as my previous post, with the eyedropper correction applied.

These incuse Indian coins are about the hardest types to grade, which is why I looked for a TPG-verified MS example. I wanted some confidence that I wasn't paying MS money for an AU or problem BU coin. This piece is lustrous and seems to have a better-than-average strike. I don't see anything that suggests NGC overgraded it, but Coin Community graders can be a tough crowd.

These and pretty much any gold coins can be very tough to grade (at least for me)

To get a 64+ grade that coin must have booming full mint luster. That is a high grade Indian to be sure! Congrats on the nice purchase!
