My wife stopped by the bank today to see if she could pick up some half dollar rolls for me. The teller told her they had some but that she could only get a maximum of $50. So she got them and I went through the five rolls not finding anything of real interest.

I am new to this, having only gone through 14 rolls so far. One thing I keep finding is that there seems to be several in each roll in which there is a black dot on the obverse, usually on Pres. Kennedy's nose, as though someone is marking them for some reason. Has anyone else seen this, or know why this is being done? I have found a couple of silver ones in rolls that had the marked ones.

While she was there the teller told her that earlier a guy came in and turned in 10 rolls of "old silver dollars" as well as some old $2.00 bills with a red seal. Needless to say they were snatched up in a hurry.

Some people do this to the coins at the ends of a roll. They do this so they know that they have searched through those rolls.

Marked coins.

People do it to try to track dumping and picking up so as not to get the sames coins twice.

It doesn't work.

coin marking in my opinion doesn't work because cash vaults throw coins into a pool or bucket and machine scrambles them up and counts them and rolls them so coins dont stay together....just my opinion I do find silver rarely along with marked coins..

i dont mark and dislike marked coins what markers mark might be what I collect or someone else unless coin is trashed already then knock yourself out if it makes you happy..

Half dollars were unfortunately the target of several "get rich quick" schemes in the past few years. Strictly in terms of mintage figures, the 40% silver halves should be a good 30% of the total circulating population--about as common as the 1971-1977 halves. I've seen plenty of books that tell tall tales of "free silver" to be had by searching halves. This draws in plenty of people who are blinded by the idea of an early retirement and have no respect whatsoever for the hobby--they will literally deface anything that isn't silver in the false belief that they are making their job easier. I've found plenty of beautiful BU halves with an ugly black or red X right through Kennedy's face--others on here have found marked error coins, proofs, and other collector only coins that have been defaced by these silver bugs.

It's an ugly truth you have to face when searching half dollars--I guarantee that the person who triggered the "no more than $50" rule at your bank turned in a few marked coins himself.

Hunters have been marking coins for years, to see how soon they return.
They return soon enough, most coin is rolled locally and sent back to the banks.

Those old silver dollars the teller spoke of were probably clad Eisenhower dollars, so don't feel bad. I've inquired on Craigslist adds listing silver dollars, when in fact they are clad Ikes.
Many today still call them silver dollars.
