Quote:But it's an
ebay photo of a coin inside plastic. Definitely a pretty coin, but how can you accurately grade a photo? The seller could take 1000 pictures and cherry pick the best one... or even doctor the photo.
There are folks here who have graded
thousands of coins from photos. Once you've been around a while, you'll note that most of the time, the membership generally nails the "Guess the Grade" threads. Grading from photos isn't hard if you've done enough of it, just like grading in the real world. It's simply an additional skill.
There are also members here who have shot
thousands of coin images, and have a good feel for detecting postprocessing alterations and imperfect photographic technique resulting in a deceptive image. Most members of this group are also members of the previous group. Photography at this level (skill the seller in question seems to have, as well) doesn't involve very much difference between successive images, because one knows how to do it right the first time.
PCGS is
notoriously hard on both Proofs and Lincolns. This is a Proof Lincoln, therefore twice bitten. It's also a Proof Lincoln which has only 6 examples in higher grade from PCGS - 4 BN's and 2 RD's. In a new slab, so PCGS is quite sure how rare they are in true Superb Gem grades, and they're not issuing yet another one easily.
That all said, this one's a 67 all day, and I don't really think Rick Snow's asking price is all that out of line.
