Is it just my impression or does it seem like the number of auctions exceeds the demand? Not many of the coins seem to be bid for anything close to Trends, if bid at all, even after including premiums and taxes. The contrast to the US market is considerable. Trends pricing really looks off-the-mark when matched to these auction prices. Comments anyone?

all depends on the coin.....if in fact, it's a very unique offering, and as a collector, you just have to have it.....that's when the crazy prices happen. but you are right for any coin/note with lots of supply, very few will reach trends, and in fact go unsold, or sell for 50% of cat value. Still, a lot of collectors don't trust ebay, and if they attend Torex in person, sometimes the auction atmosphere gets people excited so that logic flys out the door.....like on Storage Wars.

I bought a few tokens yesterday and was very pleased with the prices. These auctions are a buyers market and yes, there are those few issues that get highly competitive.

So, a die rotation that hit a magic number?
I sometimes wonder if the rarefied air has caused people to lose the ability to distinguish a variety from an error.

Thanks Tripoli. A good answer. Billfrak, here is one of the tokens I bought. I'd be interested to see if anyone else bought an intriguing token. There were many attractive tokens in this auction and also in the Geoffrey Bell auction a few weeks ago. Here is one of the tokens that I was happy to snag. Not all that costly either. My winning bid was $110. It is a MS-62 Breton 901 and there is only one other example graded higher in the ICCS pop report (Blakely & Co., Halifax, N.S. Obverse designed to resemble a U.S. Liberty Head Gold Eagle). Cool coin that could have been marketable in a US auction.

There is a Western Canadian collector who bid and won a large majority of the error coins tonight along with many other high graded coins. I guess cool coins generates really high prices if factor in the juice and tax.

Let's face it, the Canadian coin market has been dead since the economic downturn and has not recovered. Trends pricing is not realistic and needs to be adjusted to reflect reality. Of course no dealer wants to see the value of his inventory plummet but this is the reality of the times we live in.
It's a good time to be a collector but anyone who collects with an idea of selling later at a higher price is bound to be disappointed, except for holders of true rarities.
The U. S. market is strong because there are many entrenched organizations and large dealers who excel at the art of hype, and of course the collector base is much larger. Even so there are signs of fatigue in the U. S. market.
If you want to see examples of hype go to the PCGS website and visit the Message Boards. The recent release of the Hall of Fame baseball coins is a classic example of how hype is applied. Now, a few months after release of those coins the music is stopping and a lot of people are finding that they don't have a chair in which to sit....

justanothercoinaddict, I couldn't agree more with you. I welcome these auctions since I am accumulating. The large auctions, like Moore's Legacy, allows us be more selective and disciplined. I don't think it is easy to make money on coins as a collector at this time. The key is to buy right and most important of all, not get over invested. A lot of the old timers have to sell and in Canada the under 50-year olds just do not have the money since they are mortgage heavy from buying inflated real estate. From what I can see, the RCM product is going to younger buyers and eventually that will refresh the hobby. Eventually they will catch the bug, just like we did.

I won a few items via Internet bids, but no where does it say if I can pickup my items locally, and they aren't responding to emails. Does anyone know if we can pickup in person?

You can pick up tomorrow or latter at their store on Monday, that was the answer yesterday.

Starting bids were high, but an unreserved auction with low starting bids would probably be recipe for disaster in the current Canadian coin market. After some deliberation I went after only one lot, and was reasonably satisfied with the hammer price. It's a good time to stick to your guns and pick up coins that have been on your "list" for a while!
