Just received this coin today, certified by NGC. While looking under magnification I noticed something odd... My first reaction was EEEEEWWWW, but upon further inspection, believe it or not, that white hair or fiber is actually trapped underneath the metal. It's hard to see in the picture, my photography skills are lacking, but in hand it appears there are 3 distinct fibers emerging from underneath the lamination. Anyone ever see something like this? How is this possible? Also, cool or gross?

Damage to the coin. Laminate peeled back and bent over trapping some hair/fibers.

Whatever it is, I wouldn't want it on my coin. If it is hair.... Uh, cool?

Quote: What did she grade? Looks like a good one. MS65 RD. The lamination error wasn't visible in the sellers photo... Might have steered clear of this one.. Then again it's kind of interesting... Quote: this comes off as a bit pretentious/ coin snobbish Actually I have to agree with Cruisin on this one. That is PMD IMO and should have had a details grade. Its a gouge that folded the top layer over. I would have already had that on the way back to the seller.

I would have already had that on the way back to the seller. I never asked for on opinion on whether I should return it or not, although I very well might. I payed about $7 for this coin, and I thought it was interesting and worth sharing... On another note, I want to mention that I've enjoyed coin collecting for many years, regardless of my new membership and low post count on this site. I've noticed some members, while very knowledgeable, lack a certain tact that might turn off or discourage new hobbyists from posting or asking questions and opinions. I think there's a distinction between giving an expert opinion and being pretentious... My opinion and general life philosophy is that doing the right thing or knowing the right answer can sometimes be performed or communicated wrongly. Being polite and tactful makes a greater impact on people than being blunt and putting them down. Unfortunately in coin collecting you see the latter extreme too often. CCF is a great place for enthusiasts to feel safe to ask questions and learn and discover new things. Let's keep it that way! ...Group hug.

Well, I was unaware giving an opinion was discouraging a collector regardless of their experience level. My opinion is it is PMD. To me it is a gouge that peeled bqck the lamination. Conder has a different opinion. And thats how it goes. I am pretty sure that is one of the big reasons to post. Garner opinins and such. Generate discussion etc. No need to get all indignant.

Retained lamination that snagged a hair, fiber, or junk. I'm surprised the submitter didn't see it and remove it before submitting unless those are fibers from a cloth that they used to wipe the coin before sending it in.
