New collector here who spent last weekend in Wichita, KS for the state coin show and made my first coin show purchase. I got a 2001 WTC Recovery Silver Eagle (pic of identical coin below) for $180. Talked him down from $200. I know that's a high premium and there are controversies about their legitimacy, but I'd like to think I made a decent deal for a coin with truly unbelievable history.

To be honest, the price is extremely hyped up and dealers use 9/11 as a means to inflate prices to the point where they're making substantial profit.
If you enjoy the history it makes sense but I'm guessing the price for these will substantially drop soon.

While the label is clearly a marketing gimmick the $180 - $200 price seems to be inline with what sellers are asking / selling them for on Eaby.

The third coin listed by Jack Rabbit is PMD. Why would someone go in and clad a silver coin? Are the others actually PCGS graded? Don't they have to have serial numbers?

How exactly is this ASE connected to 9/11? Was it just struck on September 11, 2001 or is it something more?

Quote: Are the others actually PCGS graded? Don't they have to have serial numbers? No. PCGS does a lot of slabbing for large sellers (TV shows, etc.) and with enough volume will put ANYTHING on the label you want. The 2nd coin is labeled "Collectors Universe" which is the parent company (using the PCGS shell note the embossed letters on the bottom right. #3 - NTC - is a separate company from PCGS. They're a real company, doing business today, http://www.ntccoin.com/, albeit very low prices ($1 each summer special) and without the same reputation as the big four. I jokingly refer to them as "Not This Coin" as in somewhere there is an MS70 of this date & mintmark, but not this coin.

That's a nice purchase. Enjoy it and stay excited about the hobby. Keep at it and keep making purchases you are happy with. There's always a learning curve.

It was - and this isn't in question - physically present in a vault under the WTC on that day. They were careful about confirming this status when they did the slabs, and although I disagree with their long-term collectability/value (what they're going for today may be unsupportable in ten years) I don't question their provenance.

The main thing is you went to a coin show. And your first coin show too. Regardless of what you purcahsed or didn't purchase, what you spent, what you got, the main thing is did you have a good time? Did you learn things at the show? Did you get to talk to people about coins and their hobby and/or buiesness? In most instances people that go to a coin show for the first time enjoy the experience more than the purchasees. I go to about 2 to 3 shows a Month. I usually don't buy anything anymore. Got way to much STUFF. But I do still learn new things, get some free Albums or Folders from dealers I've got to know. I have fun, enjoy looking at some coins I don't collect and may not ever collect either. But I come away with more than I went there for in the way of just having fun.
