Half dollar planchet cut from quarter stock strip. There was someone who has found several of these from 1971-D. He has had as least two of them certified as being struck on quarter stock. They have the same weight as your coin so I think it is probably the same thing.

It's either quarter or nickel stock, I don't recall for certain, but yes, I have seen the pictures of those on the wrong stock. If I recall correctly, they were ANACS certified.

No disrespect intended from the smiley towards Condor101 as he is the all wise and all knowing and I take his O-109 R5 vs ANACS O-110 as being correct on my bust half contrary from every comment from the peanut galley as being as cast fake to what have you.

Anywho I have about 10 or of the 10.4g.

I don't know what causes them but the fact that they are all dead on at 10.4 (vs the 11.3 all the way up to 11.8 I have found) would lead me to believe that it is some sort of metal mixing manufacturing or rolling defect.

Maybe if the clad stock goes through multiple rolling processes maybe if it is half stock 11.2 is the normal roll, 10.4 is one more step towards a quarter, and then 8.8 is the final quarter roll, and a dime is a step or 2 more through the roller.

If I ever have the time I will get all of them out and get a log of the dates and mintmarks.

I have also found the hollow thud sounding magicians coins weigh in at 10.4 which I would have thought would have weighed a whole lot less.

PS: I sent 2 from the latest batch in for the ANACS insider special free grading (less attribution)

Thanks ANACS

You're right, ran the numbers and a half dollar on quarter stock should be 9 grams (Half dollar is 1.59 times larger than the quarter when multiplied by 5.67 grams equals 8.99 grams.) I must have been mis-remembering the weight on the other fellows halves on quarter stock.

Just proves I AM human and I do make mistakes. (I do TRY to keep them to a minimum though.)
