Hey everyone! I'm a lurker here, but I wanted to get some other opinions on whether these two Morgans are natural or artificial toning. They came from a lot of 20 I bought, where a few had multi-colored toning like this, and the rest all had a similar pattern of light orange rim toning like you see in the first obverse picture (but on both sides). Sorry for the iPhone pictures and lighting, but it can be hard to get a good picture showing the toning. Thanks!

I'm pretty it's AT. You can especially tell on the reverses of both coins, the colors have this splotchy effect, not the uniform pattern seen on naturally toned coins.

Hmmmm....I would go the side of NT...They look like a bunch of my drawer toners and nothing screams anything other than a natural process.

I've found many "blotchy" toners...depends on what is on the coin surface when it tarnishes...oils etc. ASE's that have been previously dipped can re-tone unevenly also.

Ok...you want to talk about crap pictures here's one....but it shows the uneven toning on a coin that was previously dipped years before it retoned. There are actually colors there but I am too lazy to reimage the coin. I found this in my files:

The 1896 looks like it was dipped and re-toned in an album that was probably not stored in proper conditions. The 1902 looks like it may have been intentionally toned with heat or chemicals as the catalyst. Both would likely be considered AT by grading companies.

Thanks for the responses! I was reading the Jhone E. Cash article on toned Morgans and saw this picture: http://www.jhonecash.com/images/coins/at1.jpg

The colors there reminded me of the 1896 immediately, but mine looked more natural to my eye (less of an "oil slick" appearance over the coin). I've seen PCGS/NGC coins (non-details) with blotchy toning like the 1902, but usually covering more of the coin, so I was curious for a second opinion.
