I haven't posted in quite some time .. seems my collecting runs hot and cold, I guess. I had been buying sets, upgrading coins in my set, and selling off the amended set. I thought that the last time I did that, it would be the last time I could do that on an "affordable" basis ... but ... I picked up a partial set last week that had nice, lustrous AU coins from the branch mints from 1934 to 1943. To boot, the set had a 1921-P and a 1926-S. A few more acquisitions and i'll have the set from 34 to 45 in AU/BU. I started looking at lots on ebay, and found this little group. It was 63 dollars shipped. When I see a nice specimen that "could be" very desirable with a given mint mark, I always think to myself "OK .. put a "D" on that puppy and "I'm in". Such was the case with the 1925 in this lot. Imagine my surprise when the "D" actually was there this time. While certainly not one of the biggies, it's tougher in higher grades without spending more money than I am usually fond of spending. It's a welcome addition to my set, which is now getting pretty nice. I may never own the big keys in the grade I would like, but unlike many collectors, I would be happy with a set short the 3 big ones all in AU/BU ... and while some consider the error coins to a "necessity" for a complete set ... I think they'd be nice to have, but I am focusing on "regular issues" for now. I'll try and post some pictures of my collection after a few more coins arrive and are "plugged into" my Dansco album. For now, I wanted to share this lot with those of kindred spirit. As someone who has trouble depicting mint luster in my digital photos, I can appreciate this picture for what it is, and expect the coins will look even better "in the flesh". The 16-S definitely looks cleaned, and likely the 23-P is as well, but everything else looks pretty natural to my eye .. but I'll reserve judgement on even those 2 until I have them "in hand". They're in transit from Houston Texas ... and 2 days into their journey via "standard mail" ... so it'll likely be a few more days until they get here. It looks as though the 1925-D has a die break on the obverse. At first I thought it was a big scratch, but look where it intersects the truncation of her neck ... and it appears to be a die break. We shall see. Chance Edited by Chancellor Sutler 07/01/2014 7:31 pm

While not "coins" ... I picked up a couple UNC civil war tokens in a small lot of Indian heads a few years back. As I recall, the entire lot was something like 12 bucks. Both have traces of red in protected areas, with all of the luster present, but toned an even brown. They're both "patriotic" versions and are common ones, but I "got 'em for a song" and they're in "uncommon" condition.

Oh yeah ... I forgot ... That last set from ebay also had real nice 31-D and 31-S issues to boot. Chance

Looks good to me, thanks for posting. What are your thoughts on the 16-D are you going to go for a low grade or ? Regardless, I would think you want one in a TPG holder.

I'll hold out hope for scoring one in higher grade...later .. probably much later. Even the 21-P is going to be in excess of 1500.00 in the grade I'd ultimately like to have. The 16-D ... probably 4 grand or better. I'd never spend a thousand bucks on a low grade one though. I'd rather have the set "incomplete".

Nice group of Mercs. I'm working on one at the moment also. Well, actually two. I'm back-filling an old Library of Coins album as I work on my Dansco. ( Thanks Raymo ) I'm complete 34 & up AU/Unc with the exception of 35-D & 36-S with many empty holes prior. I'm finding it's really difficult to score anything pre 34 in decent shape (un-molested) at FMV. Oh yeah, I like the look of that die crack. Do post a good photo when you get this one in hand.

I just decided to look at the selections from the last upgrade set to see if any of the newly acquired coins had fully split bands. There are a few. 1935-D, 1937-S, 1938, 1938-D, and 1943. The pre-34 issues in higher grades are tougher indeed... and mine have almost all come from overseas dealers selling via ebay. My 1919-D is painfully close to FSB. It came from the UK and cost pennies on the dollar in contrast to FMV. It came in a lot from South London that also contained uncirculated Barbers 1903 and 1913. I bought that lot for just over melt a couple years ago. Chance

I got the lot in the mail today. The "die break" is a scratch. It's not nearly as pronounced as the seller's image makes it appear, but it's a scratch nonetheless I'm still pleased with it, until a better one comes along. The 1916-S and the 1923-P are much nicer than the seller's pictures make them appear. Both of those have replaced pretty darn nice specimens in my No 1 set, and have moved to the second set. Heres the 25-D. unfortunately, my abilities with this Fuji camera are limited, so all my pictures offer is better focus. The surfaces are not well represented at all. I can take a picture of a brand new penny and it looks like plastic. I bought an old Wayte Raymond album for my No 1 set. Its smaller than the one that houses my Indian and Lincoln cents from 1857 to 1974, but the same format. It (the merc album) looks like its never had coins in it. Chance

I'll keep this thread going. I am buying another partial set this evening. It will upgrade several issues from 1929 to 1934. From 34 on everything in the set is AU/BU, so I'll discern whether or not any of the coins from 34 to 45 are better than those in my collection.
I think I'm gonna find me an old Kodak easyshare camera. That little camera took lots better pics of coins than this 200 dollar Fuji I got. I just don't like it.

Here are some pictures of the partial set I bought tonight. I sold off a roll of quarters and a roll of half dollars to finance the purchase. I basically bought it for the 1930 and 31 issues since the rest of my collection is pretty comparable. There may be a few upgrades here, but when I sell this one off most of it will look as it does now ... except for the 30 and 31 issues. Included, but not shown is a 45 micro-S in comparable condition. Chance
