What are peoples opinions on breaking proof sets out of the OGP?
I guess I'm talking about modern coins 1970 on up..

Keep all of yours in OGP, and then take every chance to encourage everyone you talk to into breaking out theirs.

No, not really. The same thing is happening with GSA-packaged Morgans - the day is coming when the original packaging carries a premium. I could see this happening with Proof sets, and the more you encourage it, the sooner it'll happen. The nicer they look, the more likely the owner is to crack it apart for submission, just like the Morgans. Yeah, there's a lot of Proof sets, but fewer every day in OGP.

I would say do whatever fits your collecting style. I cracked open one of each proof set from 65 up to fill my Dansco albums. I still have all my '56 through '64 in the ogp cello & envelopes, however.

The silver proof sets I keep in the OGP, 2010 and up The Unc P & D mint sets have cheesy plastic so I am considering breaking those out.

I break em if the sum of the parts, graded, is worth more than the whole. For instance, a nice DCAM or error in a 1970. I broke out a 1970 sm/lg date DDO a while back. Proof sets are cheap, so it doesn't take much to make up the cost selling the raw coins either.

I broke (almost) all of mine and put the coins in my Dansco albums.
The ones I have not broke are either duplicates or special (the Prestige sets).

I break most of mine so they can be stored more easily.
In the long run the sets will have a premium but who knows how long that will take? Before they have a premium they are worth more busted up and Gem singles are worth a lot more. Even after there's a premium Gems will have a higher premium so what I do is to save only the best of the best intact.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I order proof sets for Christmas Presents and a few for myself each year. All mine are broken out for coins for Albums. I don't need piles of proof or uncirc sets that mostly just go down in value. And since I never sell coins, one more thing not to collect.
