I spent some of this past evening perusing my just received copy of Morgan Dollar - America's Love Affair With a Legendary Coin by Michael "Miles" Standish. It's lavishly illustrated in color, and while I haven't read it every word of it yet, my initial impression is that it's certainly a worthwhile purchase for anyone interested in Morgans, as it contains plenty of tidbits about the history of this coin. Unfortunately, it fails to address the issues of grading and detecting counterfeits as does Wayne Miller's long ago published work, The Morgan and Peace dollar Textbook, so it's usefulness in identifying pitfalls for a beginning collector is limited. Also, VAM's are mentioned only sporadically and in passing, so it's hardly any help to the novice in that respect, either.

In summation, a nice enough book, but I think a lot of folks will be left wanting more substance and less fluff.

The 1976, Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars, Encyclopedia Book. By Leroy Van Allen and A.George Mallis is great for identifying VAMs. I've included the link to the Amazon listing below.

My favorite Morgan book is still John Highfill's Encyclopedia. Big and very comprehensive, though out of date on pricing. Wayne Millers textbook is also a very good book to have. I have only heard of Standish's new book, I have not put hands on it yet.

The above link is a project MeadowView Collector and I started a few months ago. He is keeping an up to date list on his computer. I need to send in about 20 new additions for him to add to it, but it is a pretty comprehensive list so far, Not sure if he added my Morgan and Peace dollar book list from this post yet, he said he was going to.

Morgan & Peace dollar book list from last year (2013) I made:

My guess would be that the author believed there were enough other books on Morgan dollars that sufficiently covered the topics of grading and VAMS and wanted to provide a different perspective on the coins. I haven't yet seen the book, but if it is more of a "story" book about the Morgan series vs. a technical study of it, it would likely be a book I would enjoy as I don't collect the series and have little interest in all the varieties.

Just my thoughts...
