The government wasn't actually put in place until 1787, and the U.S. mint didn't start producing money until 1793. In 1776, people were primarily using gold and silver coins from various countries as tender, although some colonies did produce their own coins.

My closest is a 1765 Russian 5 Kopek... bigger than a Morgan and solid copper. I actually have to wonder if they did sign on the 4th It is the Government after all. They didn't want to work on a holiday.

1776 is a gap in my collection - I didn't have anything to post in the "How Far Back Can We Go?" thread for that date. I have two George III British coins dated 1775 - a farthing and a halfpenny.

July 4, 1776 had really nothing to do with government formation, just a declaration of independence from England. Government wasn't truly official until all colonies ratified the Constitution which was in 1790. Are they not teaching history lessons in 4th grade anymore -- well the media doesn't help does it? Anyway, all coins/currency from the 1700's are cool.

Upon declaration of independance,The United States of America was born. The form of goverment was accepted later.. Still our countries birthdate is 7-4-1776.. If it wasnt suck a historical point in time I highly doubt we would have a national holiday.. Independence Day!!

I have a 1782MO FF Mexico 8-Reale from the El Cazador shipwreck, but I don't think that had a chance to circulate in America...or anywhere.
