I saw a thread on this and got to thinking about the pocket pages I have my coins stored in at the moment.

I bought these from Wizard 6 or 7 years ago back before I knew much about storage methods.

Are these safe or do I need to get my collection out of them ASAP?

As long as the coins are in a 2x2, you should be okay if you watch them. I've seen collections stored like that have the flip dissolve and PVC end up on the coin from the vinyl.

just because the name say superSAFE I would still question if they are archive quality (most pages that are inert and safe for long term storage state say so in the description)

Six years is plenty of time for things to go wrong, if they're going to.

Do the 2x2s slide easily in and out of the pages, or do they tend to stick? I'm not counting the staples catching and getting stuck, just the plastic windows. Do the plastic windows of the 2x2s that have been stored in them all this time feel sticky or slimy or different in any way? Do they look hazy? If the answer to any of these is "yes", be worried and stop using those pages. If "no", then the pages are probably OK to continue to use.

As Sap has indicated soft PVC pages DO present problems in the longer term, i.e. more than 2 years in a southern U.S. humid climate.

I noticed that despite the fact that all of my coins are Mylar 2x2's, that the red toning on red uncirculated coins was turning black in PVC album pages. Silver coins tended to survive a little better.

I was forced to replace ALL of my PVC album pages for album pages made from either polypropylene or Mylar. Fortunately all of the annotation information was written on the 2x2's, and moved with each coin.
THAT was for the benefit of more than 2,500 coins.
Now, my storage approach is similar to that of Sap.

These are the pages I use: they are PVC free, acid free, and archival quality.

I don't know why I have never seen polypropylene album pages available at any coin dealer I frequent.
I bought mine at a coin show.
For me, the polypropylene pages did not cost much more than PVC album pages.

I started with the BCW brand but found the 2x2s slid out way too easily. the pocket seam weldss were not always perfect even turning binder pages could cause coins to jump from the binder.

more expensive than BCW but the flips fit snug (but not tight). definitely worth the extra money.

My BCW page pockets are very snug. No way they can fall out. If I have to take one out its hard to get it out of the pocket. Pretty sure I could turn the binder upside down and shake and they wouldn't fall out.

I agree with 52Raymo; I use BCW pages and they are VERY snug!! Takes a lot of effort to extricate a 2x2 from them! I don't even bother stapling the 2x2's if I know I will be upgrading the coin (circulated to uncirculated), just fold and insert.

I don't have any problems getting the 2x2's to slide out of these pages. They don't feel slimy or sticky either.

The coins seem okay for the time being. I will be switching to BCW pages at the end of the year just to be safe.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
