A beautiful copper that I'm considering buying. Pictures aren't too great but this is an ancients dealer who has a few US coins in his stock. I'm having a hard time with this one because while there is definite wear, a lot of the coin appears red (RB?). If someone could help with the Breen/Cohen Number that would be great.

As for the grade I'm seeing XF-45 as well.
The book I have is United States Half Cents by Q David Bowers and James F Ruddy
Three varieties for 1828 yours being the E-71 (G-2) R-3
All the stars on your coin is slightly different.

Might squeak out an AU grade at a TPG, is that mint luster still hiding in the crevices? Hard to tell from the photos, might be a good buy if the price is right and there is a decent return privilege.

Looks EF but might just make a low AU. If I were going to buy it, I would buy it under the assumption that it has been cleaned and retoned. From what I have seen, very few circulated copper have any original red remaining and the ones that do are high AU with only a tiny bit clinging around the protected areas. An EF/AU shouldn't be nearly RB. It should be completely brown. The color on the denticles is splotchy. Some denticles are "red" and right next to them are denticles that are brown. I don't know how accurate the pictures represent the actual color but if it's accurate, it wouldn't be a good sign. The obverse has a slight pink hue which for copper is a sign of cleaning/dipping.
