Hello All! Here another Which I believe is probably an Contemponary counterfeit. From an gold UK coin. Dated 1797 It looks exactly like the 1/3 Guinea 1797 from Britain. But it weights 1,37 grams. And has some gold layer (looks). The coin should weight 2,7 gram Originally so it is not real. And I don't think there is an 1/6 Guinea known of this year? Is it? If someone could add more information would be great ! Obverse Lettering: GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA. Reverse Lettering: MAG·BRI·FR·ET·HIB·REX·1797

Looks like a contemporary brass counterfeit, produced in the Birmingham area.

Thanks both! I was wondering why you think the birminham area? Are these type of counterfeit known as from Birmingham? Do you have similair pieces somewhere for comparising maybe?
Peter I though more like some gold layer. Just to make it look real.

a technique of counterfeiting was to make a copy in copper, bronze, or brass, and then to gild it. yours looks like the gold layer has separated from the base.

I don't know if I may ask this. but I was wondering what these coins as this one are worth for an coin collector? I kind find similair ones as this and the farthing which I posted last week. So I don't have some comparing examples. Ive seen in stack and bowers that some counterfeit coins are very rare and worth alot. But this depends ofcoarse. I am no expert in this and I was hoping if someone could tell me that? Don't like to ask these questions but if I don't ask I will nevver know.

You will get market values maybe 99p. There are counterfeit collectors with deep pockets and short arms. I've never paid more than £2 for a counterfeit farthing.

When looking on Mcsearch.info . You only see that auctions like Baldwin, heritage, Stacks and bowers sell contemporary counterfeits. At least they are findable. The most coins are then United Kingdom Contemporary counterfeit half penny and penny coins. And some spanish coins 17th century. A few USA and few novodels Russia.
Funny to see that only those country's get mentioned in the records. SO probably from the other countrys aint that much known of contemporary counterfeiting?

I will have to agree with Peter, most counterfeits are worth very little. Unless the condition of the coin is near perfect and the issue is well documented, it is unlikely there will be a real premium. The rather worn example you showed a photo of...I would say the best place (as always) would be ebay so try your luck! Do bare in mind that the coin will probably fetch less than £5 however

Quote:if you look at my farthing coin. Picture above in my last reaction. You see that here on ebay by timeline auctions for 273 dollars. http://www.ebay.com/itm/VERY-RARE-C...em51941e5d04Same farthing is mine. And only one I found on ebay the others are later period farthing/penny's There's a difference between what someone asks for on ebay and what a coin sells for I'm afraid.

You are Definitly right. But timeline auctions has decent prices. I also look at their auctions and bought an old 18th century silver ring over there. I don't think they ask 40 times the price that a coin would do in normal conditions. But that is my opinion. I appreciate that you all think about it.
