Hello,

I thought that this article would be of interest to anyone wanting to keep up with the ever-improving art of high tech counterfeiting.

It appears that some of these replicas are as good or even better looking than what the US mint is able to produce.

I would like to obtain opinions on how to best detect and avoid these types of coins:

Thanks,

Sad - lets hope it doesn't come to this in counterfeiting. A horrible use of new technology.

It is all just theoretical as no such counterfeit currently exists and the technology to create such a counterfeit has not even been created yet.

Even though it doesn't exist yet, nanotechnology has some great applications, like cell repair, which could be the key to curing cancer. The possible consequences of nanobots are catastrophic. Two words: Grey. Goo. Still, it is all theoretical. So nothing to worry about for now.

I think the IETF hit the right balance with the 128 bits thing. We can fit MAC addresses in a /64 subnet, and the nanobots will only be able to devour half the planet.

Interesting article, thank you for posting it. My greatest concern is in high tech alterations with this type of technology; for example adding a perfect "D" mintmark to a 1916 Mercury dime without a trace of tooling marks, or improving the fields, sharpening the features and removing the bag marks from a Morgan dollar to raise the grade....Replication of a rare coin at the nano level most likely won't happen for a very long while but modifying an existing coin with the technology readily available now is a problem for everyone, even the grading services.
