I have a 1859 Canadian penny in VF 30 condition, it weight is 4.21 gm, is this an indication of brass, I have weighed another 1859 VF20 bronze and it weight is 4,52gm. Any help would help, coin has a black green hue to it.
Thanks
Gerry

You cannot differentiate brass by weight or apparent color. IMO only an XRF test will do these days.

Thanks, I have already found a XRF machine at the UOT and looks like a can test for $24. The only reason I am thinking of getting it test is for the blueish, blackish tint to coin, I have seen this on old 90/10 brass befor. Again thanks for your help and will post the results.

gerry if you take a piece of glass and put a very like scratch on the edge this will tell you 99% for sure.... Glass will not react to the metal so if it is brass the mark will show as yellow... If it is bronze it will show red....

If you are in the Toronto area, just take this coin to Canadian Coin and Currency in Richmond Hill, say it's a possible brass cent, they will xrf it to confirm or not and you will have your answer free.
