I've noticed a lot of coin collectors talk about "pocket pieces" Is this just as simple as keeping a cool coin in your pocket as a conversation starter, etc? Is there something more to it?

No, that is pretty much it. They also tend to wear down over the long term, more then they do in general circulation.

OK, I guess I've been doing that with my cleaning damaged large cent, then. Kind of fun to have an 1840's coin in your pocket along with the 2000's change.

I didn't know that was the point, I just read "Carry 3 for Susan B" somewhere so always had 3 on me because $3 could always help out. I just decided to spend them when most female cashiers started asking me "Why carry them around, who is Susan B Anthony?"

I do it to wear them down. I have about a dozen cleaned coins in my pocket, already the first few are beginning to look almost natural.

@Shadz, Quote: I just decided to spend them when most female cashiers started asking me "Why carry them around, who is Susan B Anthony?" What a great pick-up line. Tkbsic, looks like there are more reasons for a "pocket piece".

I thought pocket pieces also were carried to show tellers and identify silver for people that don't know.

Well, I carry an ASE for a pocket piece. It's nice to have a big ol' silver coin in my pocket. Thought if I carried a brand new ASE as a pocket piece, the coin would be a piece of the history of my own life. Also, I figured that it'd be neat to wear down an ASE and see the wearing process. I look forward to slabbing it in the next 10-20 years when it wears down to PO as a conditional rarity.
