I have been thinking about this lately. I have a lot of coins from all the Click Clacking(CRHing) I do, but my collection is getting massive. Should I sell off a quarter of my collection and use the money to buy an expensive coin or roll(s) of Silver Eagles? I've been thinking about selling 80% of my 40%silver halves and use that money to buy morgans or Peace dollars. Just curious if some of you have a system or if some of you have done it and later regretted your decision. Mr. Click Edited by Mr Click 07/14/2014 1:50 pm

I traded an assortment of 40% and 90% half dollars (duplicates from CRH) to finish off my Franklin half dollar set. I say do it if it will please you.

One of the reasons I started thinking about this, is because a Coin Guy at the FUN Show was searching for a coin to give my kids and he couldn't find it. He looked through 4 or 5 huge boxes and finally found a couple of coins to give my kids. I thought man that may be me in a couple of years. Would it be better to have a coin collection worth $10,000 or would it be better to have 2 or 3 exclusive coins that equal $10,000! (It would be lighter, that's for sure) For example: 1909s vdb MS?, a 1893s Morgan .....

There aren't really any rules with collecting, it's just whatever you think will be the most fun and/or best investment depending on goals.
Would trading in some of your 40% silver coins leave you with a less complete set of those coins? If so, you might regret it in the future when you see your album/folder has those blanks. If you have a complete set of that series and a ton of duplicates, then you probably won't miss them.

When thinking of buying or converting, be aware and understand the premiums for 90%. Morgan/Peace dollars usually sell over spot, whereas rolls of 90% Washington quarters don't.

The more and more I think about it, most of my coins are either from Click Clacking or buying silver from others in bulk. I don't really have a rare coin! I would love to sell some silver coins that I don't really care for and buy: 3 legged buffalo 1909s vdb penny 1921 Peace dollar1893s Morgan dollarThen I would have a few crown jewels in my collection!

In my opinion Mr click, I keep everything I have. That's why It's called stacking ;)
Also, god forbid, say we have a economic or financial collapse, it may be difficult to use your 2-3 pieces as currency or barter.
If you give two craps about a collapse and you just want nice coins, by all means, turn em in!
Keep us posted

I never sell anything, everything has a place in my collection even if it no longer interests me. That is why it is called a collection and not a collect and sell ... tion

They don't call it a "hoard", either! You have to be at least a little selective in what you keep long term unless you have a massive vault safe in your basement.

I hear ya ! I have been hoarding to the point that I'm having trouble reaching my keyboard. I started listing my problem coins and extras on ebay yesterday. I really need to get a handle on it lol.

I'm going to have to come up with some percentages like 45% will be numismatic value, 45% will be silver, and 10% gold or something like that. Does anyone have a good pie chart of their collection?

I sold most of my 40% halves found coin roll hunting and swapped it out for Eagles about a year back. I never regretted it and would do it again without hesitation.

If you want true bartering power in a major meltdown, invest in toilet paper!

You said in your last post you keep even stuff that no longer interests you. So it sounded like perhaps they were no longer special to you if you don't find them interesting. Either way, you can't keep every Buffalo nickel and Wheat penny you find. Some culling is necessary, either before it goes into the collection, or later on as it grows.
