Hi All, First time here. Here's a '66 nickel with a "tree" growing behind the right roof on the reverse. What is this error type called? Thanks for looking.

looks like it could be a broken/gouged/chipped die. I am NOT an expert though. One of those should pipe in soon. Good luck.

Yes, a die chip. I think I've seen this nick-named the alligator on the roof variety, but I'm not completely sure, (its not sounding correct at the moment!)

OP here. I just noticed the design is also missing detail on both sides of the dome.

Thanks for pointing that out! The missing detail was caused by excessive die polishing. A very cool coin there, especially since it's in such good condition.

All of the "scratches" you see on the reverse are die polishing lines, that die would have been abraded to remove clash marks. You can still see a small remnant of the clash under the E and P of EPU(the vertical raised mark).

Most chips remind me of somebody gum they spit out and stuck onto something. This one fits that theory.

Fun find! That's called a Die Chip, and it's a big one too! The die has also been over polished to remove Die Clashes as well.
Errers and Varietys.
