I'd like to complete my Canadian Nickel set, as many varieties as possible, it's not a huge amount of coins but a goal I'd like to reach. Dimes on the other hand, as many as I can find!!

I did a bag of 4000 1938-D buffalos once. Took about 15 years at a casual pace. When I started I was buying them for 50 cents each. When I finished I was paying roughly 1.50 each. I'm working on my 2nd bag now.
I do some stupid stuff but I enjoy it and that's all that matters.

Quote:My goal is to complete my Wheat cent set by coin roll hunting only. Good luck on that 1909-S V.B.D I don't roll hunt anymore, I did back when I first started hunting. My goal was to finish my Canadian Silver Quarter Set (1937-1967) by coin roll hunting. I got all except the 1937, 1950 and 1954 after 3 years and ended up buying those once I started actually buying coins for my collection.

Quote: Mr Click what's your nicest wheat find so far? My best find was when my son and I found that huge hoard of wheats in 4 B.O.A boxes. I (We) found 3 1909 wheats and probably 150 other nice wheats between 1910 - 1939. no 1913s or 1914d yet

Nice bag Greg!
Hmmm...thinking Mr. C....
I really appreciate those collectors, perhaps purists, who attempt to complete their collections by finding their specimens in the wild (good luck Dan!!). But agreeably, some of the coins folks need are extreme longshots to be found in circulation. Buying a coin is probably essential to completing the collection, if that's your goal, especially if your collection includes high grade coins.
Collecting includes buying coins, trading, gifting, etc. It's a process and to each his/her own. As for goals, big or small, some will be more or less attainable. These are mine:
To broaden my knowledge and understanding on the history of coins, the coining process, and enjoy the excitement of making discoveries/finds how ever small they may be.
Objectives:
Lincolns - got to around 20 open slots so I started acquiring via LCS or bid board at the LCS but I'd like to complete Jeffersons - complete the best set I can from the wild/circulation finds; this is achievable Indian Heads, Buffalos, Mercury, Roosevelts, Washingtons - complete, perhaps, from LCS bid board (with some LCS purchasing)
I accumulate Lincolns/Jeffersons from CRHing, but at this point I'm not sure what I will do with all of them and it's not really a goal of mine anymore. In hindsight, I'm glad that I did hoard the bulk of them as a youngster as now I have a stockpile to variety hunt through. But once I'm done with that, I may keep a few from each year to hand out to new collectors, trade, sell off if practical, and dump the rest into the wild again.
Then, set some new objectives, or add to them. Perhaps going back to start an earlier set or maybe work on my Canadian stockpile. Who knows? Just fun doing what I'm doing...it seems to be working for me. Have fun everyone!

My goal is also to complete my Wheat cent by only roll hunting. Now that I'm down to so little holes to fill it's getting hard but there is no better feeling when you get the reward of filling a hole after a long day of researching

@ Danhelmick and @ socceraustin, I too would love to finish a complete wheat set by only coin roll hunting. If you are talking about just filling up the 1941 wheat book then yes, that is obtainable. I have quite a few of those filled. The 1909s, 1909s V.D.B., 1913s, 1914d and a few other teen s coins will be really really tough. It could happen. Shoot I'm hoping it happens for me as well, just not likely. What you could do though and what I might do as well is..... Take a majority of my coin roll hunted silver coins and sell them, use that money to buy the wheats you(I) can't find. That way you(I) can truely say this wheat collection was completed by coin roll hunting exclusively(in a round about way ) Either way, that is a great goal! I like it and hope it happens for all of us. I think I might have to move to San Francisco to find the "s" coins I need

I'm trying to complete a Wheat cent set via circulation only. About half way through...I am a bit of a purist, I refuse to purchase a Wheat cent. Good work everyone!

Not to "rain on anyone's parade" BUT the chance of completing a Lincoln set roll searching....well, lets just say, play the Mega Millions.... IMHO the only set that can be completed searching rolls is a Jeff set. Mine, including the 50 D and 39 Doubled Die, was done looking through change. I need a Seated Liberty dollar, No Motto to complete my type set....I am NOT looking through bags of Ike's to find it.......Buying a coin is an essential part of collecting.....
