Guys,

I need an 1878-P Morgan for my set. I am looking at this one on the bay, but I think it has been cleaned in the past. The toning appears to be secondary. Do you agree?

I think it is a nice looking coin
1878 7TF Rev of 79

I would lean toward cleaned\dipped in the past and re-toned.

Possible album toning. I still think it is very hard to determine some aspect
of a coin from pictures.

I feel could be weak strike.

Yes, I think cleaned and retoned, probably naturally.

If it matches the other coins in your collection does it matter if it was cleaned?

Yes, GR58. I pulled the trigger on it. I was actually deciding on this one and another 1878 which I know was original (original surfaces). Unfortunately, the reserve was not met on the other Morgan. The surfaces still look good to me even if it was dipped or cleaned. I'm curious to see what it looks like in hand. I'll post my own pictures when I receive it.

I have a feeling the coin will look better in hand.

Luster is hard to capture in pictures. At least for me it is.

I wish you had been right, GR58. The coin looks horrible in hand- almost completely black. The coin does look like the photos in the auction ONLY when you view it at a certain angle. None of my Morgans look this dark so I'm going to send it back. I'm not even going to waste my time taking a pic. Too bad. I'll trust my instincts next time.
