I'm still goin' through all my pennies. The second "5" in 1955 looks a little wanky to me..... any ideas?

Thanks,

Rick

Huh? Excuse my lack of understanding, but huh?
I have a ton of different die chips, and none of them seem to make a straight line. Please edify me.

Not a die chip.

It is probably damage done by a counting machine or a coin rolling machine. It is fairly common and on coins that are not quite as worn, the effect is in the shape of a ring on the coin that shows damage. As a coin wears, most of that ring wears away but the damaged letters and numerals last for the life of the coin.

Thanks,
Bill

Ok, so not a die chip!

I was equating it to the 'BIE' error where a straight die chip got inbetween the B and the E.

I was assuming that it was the same kind of die chip like this 1283 coin has.

Vaslin, is that your coin? If so, it is really neat. Interesting shadowing on the 3 in the date, also.

Rick, help me with this one. If the coin had been struck, would there still not be some remaining metal on the coin face where it started at and not be completely gone? More like the area at 10:00 on the same 5.

Not neccesarily Jim especially if foundinrolls senario is correct ,, the metal could be moved into that shape leaving very little if any remaining relief,, any that may have been left has worn smooth and toned along with the rest of the coin .

under significant magnification a person may be able to detect something but from pictures with the shadow I'm not surprised to not see anything other than the larger effects.

foundinrolls has this one pegged. It's counting machine damage.
