I saw the reverse of this 1843 Seated Liberty half dollar with a die crack running from rim to rim right through the center of the coin.

Is a die crack this big something rare?

I don't recall seeing one run all the way through a coin.

I am far from an expert on Seated halves. I looked at the online book for Seated halves by Wiley & Bugert and there it said,

This date is one of the authors' favorites. It has numerous repunched dates and almost every tail die is dramatically and differently cracked.

Die cracks, particularly in the first half of the 1800's, are not unusual.
Dies were difficult and expensive to make so they got used as long as reasonably possible.
BUT
Normally die cracks circle around coins generally through the stars on the obverse.
Die cracks that affect the central part of a coin are more unusual.
And die cracks that affect the reverse of a coin are more unusual.
Combine the two and you end up with something not rare, but definitely scarce.

Here's one of mine that's a bit odd.
I call it my "rainbow" die crack.
