It looks like one, and the number on the slab comes up on the ANACS site. Was ANACS just ANA at some point? It only says ANA on the holder. Approximately how old would this slab be? Thanks. Ed

Yes, it is. And one of the first ones since it consists of letters and numbers. These are typically referred to as "small size ANACS".

I'm guessing 89 or 90. Look up sample ANACS small slab.

Yes, first generation after they switched from the photocertificates tothe slabs. This one was issued very late 1989 or early 1990 while the ANA still owned ANACS. In early 1990 ANACS was sold to Amos Press and moved from Colorado Springs to Sydney Ohio and in mid 1990 a new hologram appeared and the underprinting on the front label changed from "Official ANA grading" to just ANACS.

Originally ANA had an authentication service (ANAAB) then added photographs and then grading. Then they added the small white slabs with the blue ANA label and the ANA's lamp of knowledge molded into the plastic housing.

The ANA era of ANACS used the two letter combinations CD, JK, KP, LO, LP, MJ, RD, TR, TS, WD, WF, WR and maybe XA. I've asked a couple of times, but nobody seems to know the order those letter pairs were used in. So you can't say CD was the 1st wave of the small white slabs, although what you have is clearly one of the 1st 120K or so ANACS slabs.

ANA sold the business to Amos Press who used the same sized slab, with a different color label and different hologram and the A molded into the plastic instead of the lamp. And things go on from there through two different owners.

Whether they were really the first to slab is a fun argument.

Are these colectable ... older slabs?

I know where one of these is, with a 1913 TY I Buffalo nickel MS-64

Would it be worth buying and putting away?

I don't know if they are collectible to anyone else & I doubt there will be any "investment" potential. Having said that, I am picking them up when I see them in hopes of eventually having a unique type set. So far I have about a half dozen. I need a Lincoln & a Buffalo nickel but I'm not looking to pay a premium for either one. That lets out key dates.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes, I did a little research and the late '89 to early '90 sounds right. I bought the one in the link. Fortunate for me the buyer really didn't describe the coin correctly and I think I got a pretty good deal. I'm thinking the older slabs might be a little bit collectible. At least to me this one was. Knew I wanted it when I saw it. It's nice that ANACS has kept their act together enough that the slab number was verifiable on their website. Thanks again.

They are getting to be fewer around by the day with people cracking them for their albums or crossovers. I have done a few myself and received good results.

Originally ANA had an authentication service (ANAAB) then added photographs and then grading.

No ANAAB came several years AFTER ANACS was sold to Amos Press. The original name of ANACS was ANAAT and was used from 1968 to 1970 while they were trying to raise the capital need to start up the service. But that name was retired before they opened for business in April of 1972 as ANACS.

ANAAB began around 1994 and was active until I believe Nov of 2003. ANAAB was strictly an authentication service and never did any grading. ANAAB was never a major player and all four varieties of ANAAB photocertificates are quite scarce.

They grade the 22 no Ds a bit different...but..yeah, I'm not crossing this over anytime soon. It will stand on it's own 2 feet just where it is.
